[DISCUSS] json as new incubator project

Hi guys,

Started to write a proposal to create a project to implement JSR-353 (json
API).

Here is the current proposal (draft):
https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/JsonImpl

It needs some mentors so if you are motivated you know what to do ;).

Any feedbacks welcomed too.

Glad to see this is coming to Apache !

Wearing my Axis2 hat, Axis2 uses Jettison and Gson for JSON support
and JSR-353 based implementation is much needed if you prefer add
Axis2 also as an user for this project.

I would like to join and contribute to this project please include me.

Thanks !

I'm agree with Romain on above comment,

1.) In my POV JSON processing became/becoming a core technology for
Java ( both EE and SE) not just limited to EE servers hence
maintaining as a separate project with less dependencies ( right now
it's 1 - AntLR) greatly improve chance of wide adoption.

2.) Right now main focus is on JSON-P spec but there is an indication
about JSON-B ( Java API for JSON Binding ) spec is also coming,
probably this project can incorporate JSON-B as well in future. In my
POV this should be the JSON related project at Apache.

3.) Current community size is a matter but I believe that is why
project founders bring this project to Apache incubator attract and
build healthy community.

4.) Having said above we always have a chance to determine the project
future during the graduation whether project make a TLP or will be a
part of existing TLP. In my POV graduation is the best check point for
this than incubator entrance.

Thanks !

Hi John,

The link is the right one ( https://github.com/rmannibucau/json-impl ).
Created it yesterday so community is small ATM ;).

Initial developpers are the one intended to get perms on the asf repo, did
I misunderstand?

If we make it a subproject of G or TomEE this will never be used outside of
these containers which would be sad. Take for instance specs jar of
geronimo, they are only used by very few people but actually could be used
by all EE users.

I expect more or less the same level of activatity as on bval, ie active
when a new spec is here (if we exclude bootstrap) and maintenance period
without that much activity.

Romain,

Can you add a link to the existing github sources? Or is the one
mentioned later on what's intended? Doesn't seem like a big community
thus far, but more on that... The current code base (if accurate)
only has a single contributor yet you list 5 initial developers.

I'll also point out that the developers are split between Tomitribe,
Irianian (Maybe I need to look at one of Gerhard's recent emails to
make sure I spelt that right) and Independent. You also note that
it's not going to be very active. Should this perhaps be a
sub-project of TomEE or Geronimo rather than its own project?

I’m pretty sure this is something CXF would be interested in as well. We currently have some level of JSR-353 support in CXF, but it’s currently just using the reference implementation [1]. Having an alternative implementation that we can use to make sure we aren’t tied specifically to the bugs/issues in one particular implementation would be a good thing.

If you need another mentor, I’d be happy to help out.

If Fleece is decided as the name, you can probably remove or edit the “Project Name” section on the proposal.

not yet supported) but at least DoS attacks are controlled" normally.

Next step for me: get an idea of the performances

Hi Christian,

updated the proposal page according to your comments (added you as mentor
for now and merged initial/core dev parts).

Will try to import noggit parser (actually I was in thr process of removing
antlr which was mainly here to get started quickly so if noggit avoids me
to rewrite a new state machine it will be very nice)

there is no rush luckily. But you are right that Commons is not always
the best option.
And if we have a big community and maybe later other json stuff at hand,
it makes sense to aim at tld.

here is the latest stable: https://github.com/yonik/noggit

Looking at Solrs code here:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/dev/trunk/solr/core/src/java/org/apache/solr/handler/loader/JsonLoader.java
it seems like it is using the latest stable (or one of them) - I
concluded that by looking at the namespace.

Noggits License is AL2.0, so it should be no problem to use some of the
code.
However i once digged through it, while i wrote my own small lib:
https://github.com/grobmeier/jjson
It turned out that it has a great approach, but wasn't that easy to
hack.
That's why I stopped merging the two code bases and mine stayed pretty
dump.

Actually I don't like antlr that much and would love to see it go. I
totally enjoy json libs with zero dependencies.

Cheers
Christian

Hi!
commons might be an option. But we still would need to go through the incubator.
Otoh Commons proved not to be very JSR friendly to be honest. We had this discussion for BVal etc, and recent JCS discussions where also not in favour for it. I'd be happy to host it over there though.

Christian, txs for bringing up noggit. Didn't even know it. How far is it away from the SOLR version? And to which degree does it cover JSON? Anyone who knows the SOLR code think we could split this out form SOLR if this version is better?

Romains code is pretty good already. But it uses antlr for parsing. Not sure how much this is a blocker when it comes to performance tuning and cutting down the size of the JAR yet.

I actually once wrote an article called "Json and the golden fleece"
(just in german),
so I would like this reference too.

I was a little bit involved in that JSR (not very active to be honest)
and developed
a JSON component myself before the JSR was in the making, so I have an
interest in it.
Unfortunately I have very limited time to help actively. Anyway if there
is trouble
to finding an additional mentor, I will step up.

On the proposal i see two sections called "initial committers" and one
"core developer". I would like to suggest to remove the section "core
developer" and on of the "initial committers" blocks.

I would like to also suggest to look into Noggit:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/labs/noggit/
which is more or less used in a later form in Solr.

As sponsoring entity it might even make sense to look at Apache Commons,
as the component will be small.
It would also relax the naming problem, as it would most likely be named
Apache Commons Json then.

Cheers,
Christian

Hi,

Apache Argonaut sounds good but I assume that name is in common use so perhaps Argus (the ship builder), or perhaps Fleece?

Hi Justing,

thanks for the catch! I updated the page and added yourself as Mentor.

About the name any proposition is welcomed. I though to "brace" BTW.

Hi,

There's a minor copy/paste error as the proposal still contains a reference to Delta Spike.
"The following JIRA project would be required to track issues for the Apache DeltaSpike project:"

> It needs some mentors so if you are motivated you know what to do ;).

I would be interested in being a mentor. I'm on the Flex PMC, Incubator PMC and have good understating of incubation and release processes. This would be my first time being a mentor, but given the number of ASF members involved in the project, I can't imaging that mentoring it would be a difficult task.

> Any feedbacks welcomed too.

Choosing a name up front would mean less work that need to be done later.
