DO NOT REPLY [Bug 50355] New: clarify syntax of mime.types file

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=50355

Summary: clarify syntax of mime.types file
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.3-HEAD
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Documentation
        AssignedTo: docs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: calestyo@scientia.net

May I suggest to clarify the syntax of the mime.types file at
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_mime.html#typesconfig to include, that
lines containing only a mime-type but not an extension (which seems to be very
common) are ignored (as far as I understood).

I think a better suggestion would be to change

""" Most administrators use the provided mime.types file, """

to

""" Most administrators use the mime.types file provided by their OS, """

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure about your interpretation. The documentation on
this is very vague:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=mime.types&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+8.1-RELEASE+and+Ports&format=html

Yes, adding that (I mean that most use the distro-version) is a good idea.

Well my distro's (Debian) version contains many lines like:
application/activemessage

(with no extension as 2nd filed)

And IMHO it should be clarified, that those are (I guess) ignored.
