png format, fo files and fop ?

All,

It seems fop does have a problem with png graphics or do I miss something ?
I process my XML documents using XT and the Docbook XSL stylesheets
distribution. The resulting fo files used to crash fop until some wise
people on this mailing list identified the error as an error in the image
processing.
I removed all image references from my fo files and it compiled.
I replaced all png images with gif images and it compiled.

What are your thoughts on that ?
