[ftpserver] how to build the ftpServer
Hi:
I'm learning how to use Mina.
I want to see the ftpserver demo, I check out the SVN code, but who can tell
me how to build it as a eclipse java project.
BTW, I can not use the maven to bulid the server. because I can not connect
the maven repos. server to download the dependency plugin and libs.
thanks!

May be the pom.xml are not 100% correct. It would worth a try without
referencing those jars in the <dependency> tag, to see if it works.

You have to declare dependencies to other modules in Maven. Make sure
you run mvn eclipse:eclipse from the root of the project to get the
Eclipse plugin to generate project references rather than imports of
JARs.

Here is the problem that I have with building an eclipse project using
the maven files in ftpserver trunk:
1. There is a dependency for ftplet-api.jar. If this is a subproject,
why is there a dependency for a pre-made jar?
2. There is also a dependency for ftpserver-core.jar. Again, if
ftpserver core is a subproject to ftpserver, why a dependency for the
pre-made jar.
I wish I knew how to deal with maven pom.xml files better so that I
could help, but my first inclination is to use the mina trunk pom.xml
file as a template and move forward from there.

Hi
In the future, please send FtpServer related questions to
ftpserver-users@mina.apache.org :-)
If you can't build using Maven you will have to hunt down all
dependencies on your own. You will find them declared in the pom.xml
files in the respective modules. After that, you will have to import
the modules (ftplet-api. core and so on) into Eclipse and set up the
Eclipse configuration (source folders, dependencies). After that you
should be good to go.

Considering that we don't advertize the server at all on the MINA site,
I would say it's pretty not ready for production. But it's up to you !
Nobody from apache will ever tell you that you can use it for a
commercial application, we will however tell you that you can do it at
will, if you are confident that it's good enough for your need.

The idea is that trunk should _always_ build and pass the tests. If it
does not, this is a mistake. Be sure that the committers are perfectly
aware of this rule, and that they usually do their experiments in some
branches. Now, sh*t happens ... Fill a JIRA when it hits the fan !

Quick update. Turns out the last failing tests was simple to fix so
the project now builds on my machine. That is, expect for commons-net
that has two failures. We bring in the project due to no snapshots
being available. I'll try to persuade them into publishing a snapshot
so that we can rid of the import.

Forgot to "reply-all"...
> 1. trunk is unstable, tests might breaks (this is the current solution)
As soon as we don't have released a version yet, this is an acceptable
situation, as soon as it's not permanent.
The idea is to reach a point where the trunk builds, and then switch
to branches when adding new features.
What is not acceptable (but we see that from time to time=) is that
trunk can't build just because we are adding new features, when it has
build before. This means that we *must* check that trunk build before
committing new code, or merging an branch into code.
> 2. Current trunk is moved to a branch, no trunk exists
This is what we call 'incubation'
> 3. The 1.4 branch (which will see no further development unless
> someone steps up) is promoted to trunk and the current trunk is moved
> into a branch
This is another option. If the 1.4 branch was building, and that the
trunk is just a new version but using 1.5, then this is what should
have been done :
- a branch should have been created for 1.5
- when the 1.5 branch would build, it then should have been promoted to trunk
But it seems we missed this step.
So from now on, and as we didn't released yet, I would say : go for
option 1 but try to fix the problem asap.

Yeah, as I write above I certainly agree with this. So, what would be
the preferred option here while we restructure the code? Since some
changes are quite large they might inevitably break tests for some
interim period.
1. trunk is unstable, tests might breaks (this is the current solution)
2. Current trunk is moved to a branch, no trunk exists
3. The 1.4 branch (which will see no further development unless
someone steps up) is promoted to trunk and the current trunk is moved
into a branch
I'm perfectly happy wih either of these, but out of three bad options
I choose 1.

No, certainly not. The best would have been to have a building trunk,
and some branches which may have build failure, but as we don't have
branches yet, let's fix the trunk and then switch to a better politic
: use branches for experiments. In the mean time, well, intrepid users
will have some opportunity to find fixes for the trunk ;)
Spreading this kind of messge ( "trunk is unstable" ) is superfluous.
Trunks are not supposed to be stable, and if someone want to use it
for any kind of production application, this is its call.

I very much agree. The trunk is under heavy reconstruction and there
are currently some tests that fail due to race conditions. I haven't
had the time to investigate them fully. If anyone has the time to look
at it, you're more than welcome :-)
> Also, how mature is the project? Can I start using this in a commercial application or is it still too unreliable? (From the unit tests, I would believe it is not ready yet...)
trunk is not currently production ready. The 1.4 branch is fairly
stable and used in several commercial (and open source) products. My
recommendation would be to use the 1.4 branch if you need to code to
work now and have a plan to move to trunk as it gets more stable. Of
course, bug reports and improvements are always welcome. We're usually
fairly quick at fixing bugs and applying patches.
> I hope I will not offend anyone but, to avoid breaking the trunk build, I would recommend you to adopt a development branch that would synchronize with the trunk branch only if all unit tests pass. This way, the user won't check out stuff that is unreliable and break unit test.
While I generally agree with you, the code is in transition at the
moment which is causing the pain. With the current restructure done on
a branch (which was an option) there wouldn't really have been a trunk
at all since the 1.4 code is no longer developed. So, instead I've
communicated on this list that trunk is unstable at several occasions.
Maybe I should also add a note to the site to make it more clear?

As this is a collaborative effort, sharing info about what's wrong and

Well, I don't know, but 2.0.7 fixes some bugs in 2.0.6, so there is no
reason we should stick with a buggy version when a new one is out there.
May be looking on the Maven site for a release note could help ?

The problem is that you must compile the subprojects separately and
then import the jar files into your local maven repository by hand.
As for feedback, I posted instructions on how to do all this in the
interim until the pom.xml file gets fixed.
The maven version problem is not a big deal. I upgraded my environment.
Thanks..

Yeah, there was a bug in 2.0.6 that made the build failed. Reported
somewhere in the Maven JIRA but I can't seem to find it now. Since
quite a few users reported issues with this we decided after some
discussion to disable the use of 2.0.6 (the same was true for Maven
versions before 2.0.5). Anyways, it might well have been related to a
plugin that has since been fixed. If you can build with 2.0.6 I would

While I agree that this is an option, none of the other MINA
subprojects require this. For consistency, they should all be the
same.
I am sorry if I am nitpicking and I apologize if I am upsetting
anyone, but as this program grows and evolves we should try to make
things easier for the users in order to gain more users and continued
satisfaction for the program.
Another question I have, the pom.xml requires that maven 2.0.5 or
2.0.7 are used. OS X comes with 2.0.6 and this causes a problem. Is
there a reason why 2.0.6 cannot be used?
Thank you.

There is something I don't get : if you can do a svn to get the code,
you should be able to get the jars from the maven repo, at least once.
When you have done this once, you can build locally using the -o flag
(mvn -o eclipse:eclipse, for instance).
