[logging] demonstration code

i think i now agree with simon that the demonstration code would be
better outside trunk. after consideration, i'm thinking of creating a
directory called etc as a peer to branches, tags and trunk.

so, if anyone wants to make a case to keep it in trunk, now would be a
good time to speak up...
