Subject: Turbine + various OM solutions?

Hi All,
Just a quick query. Rather than a need for Turbine as such, I needed a
good Object Mapping solution
for my app. I began looking at Torque and to some extent thought it was
ok. I also looked at other
solutions, in particular Hibernate, and ended up opting for Hibernate
for a number of reasons. (I
found the classes generated by Torque to be confusing - each table with
four classes - and I found
the "query language" for Torque to be poorly documented, and limited
(there is no comprehensive
documentation, so far as I know(!), illustrating how to use Criteria
objects, which are the heart of
the Torque query mechanism. Hibernate had a modest learning curve, good
examples, a nice query
language (a bit like SQL), and it didn't produce all those classes. Of
course Hibernate has a different
design philosophy, and is at a more advanced stage of development.)

My question is this: would it be very difficult to use Turbine with
Hibernate instead of with Torque?
Has this been done already? Or more generally, are people using other
OM tools apart from Torque,
with Turbine?

Thanks for feedback
Regards
Goffredo

RE: Turbine + various OM solutions?

Posted by Robert Douglass <r....@onlinehome.de>.
I love the idea of Torque, but am severely frustrated by the concentration
of code in Ant tasks. To me, it seems a little unbalanced. I'm left
inspecting the build.xml files, figuring out how I can replicate the Ant
targets programatically. When I figure it out, I will write a how-to
describing how to set up a database, add the Torque layer, and then bind it
to an already built and installed Turbine. Unless someone has already
written this document(?).

Hi
I am just in the same situation as Goffredo. I love Turbine, still I do
not feel the same about Torque. So I use Hibernator on my own projects, and
here at my work we are using an internal mapping solution.
Everything would be just fine, but since Turbine is so tightly
integrated to Torque, we haven't been able to use the logging and security
services in Turbine. There may be some way to decouple this services from
Torque, but we don't know how.
So we think here that it would be nice to have a OM tool independant
Turbine sometime in the near future. Are there any plans for this? Hope
so...
