accessing user info?

I'm trying to access user information as described in the JSR-168 (PLT.17).
When I call request.getAttribute(PortletRequest.USER_INFO), all I ever 
get is null. Is this part of the portlet spec (completely) 
unimplemented? Shouldn't it at least return an empty map when the user 
is logged in (according to PLT.17.2)?
