[Bug 123413] New: Files of type .odp authored in Impress 4.0.1 are deemed corrupt by PowerPoint and vice versa

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123413

            Bug ID: 123413
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Files of type .odp authored in Impress 4.0.1 are
deemed corrupt by PowerPoint and vice versa
           Product: Impress
           Version: 4.1.0-dev
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: P3
         Component: open-import
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: tsibiski@hotmail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

Files authored or saved as .odp using Open Office Impress 4.0.1 are deemed as
corrupt when attempting to open them in PowerPoint. The same thing occurs when
trying to open files made or saved in PowerPoint using Impress.

This was originally thought to be a possible storage issue with our company's
software causing corrupt files. However, I was able to determine and reproduce
the issue myself using the newest version of Open Office released on 9/25/2013.

This is affected dozens of users now at our company, and the number is
increasing.

Thank you for any and all help!

I'm not sure it is fair to brush it off as naive, but I am not simply
suggesting this for PowerPoint. The same issue occured with OpenOffice as it
did with Powerpoint.

Apache has control over its own software. While I understand Apache cannot make
PowerPoint have a friendly message alerting the user to invalid file versions,
Apache can certainly have a message to that effect in their program. (Just
constructive criticism, rather than a complaint).

Please attach such a file and describe in more details, what is wrong. Do you
have checked the information given by Microsoft, whether PowerPoint is able to
render the features you used?

In which ODF format do you save? ODF1.0/1.1 or ODF 1.2 or ODF 1.2 extended?

Which version of PowerPoint do you use? PowerPoint 2010 is only able to read
ODF1.0/1.1, you need PowerPoint 2013 to read ODF 1.2.

Following comment 1 steps, .odp file opens OK in PowerPoint 2010 after repair.

AOO401m5(Build:9714) - Rev. 1523756
2013-09-16 20:50:21 (Mo, 16 Sep 2013)
Win 7

PS expected result is a bit naive considering Microsoft has no interest
promoting open formats over its proprietary formats.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Open "OpenOffice" Impress v4.0.1
2. Create an .odp file with basic contents
3. Save file
4. Open "PowerPoint"
5. Attempt to open previously created .odp file

Result:
File requires repair and is corrupted and erred when viewed.

Expected:
File can be opened without error.

Workaround:
Only open .odp files in the program that authored them.

Hi Regina, how do I find that out?

Shouldn't programs give a message that the file version is incompatible, rather
than say that the file is corrupted or just displaying a damaged-looking file?
