1.5.2 up for signing/testing
I'm pleased to announce that Subversion 1.5.2 is up for testing and signing.
The magic revision is r32768, 2**15. You can find the tarball here:
http://test.hyrumwright.org/svn/1.5.2/
You know the drill: signatures from full committers back to me, and enthusiastic
tester feedback is welcome. At this point, this candidate is not yet blessed
for wide release, so please don't make it available to people not interested in
test-driving the new release. Even though the code has been tested and signed
previously, please test and sign this release to ensure code completeness and
that I didn't bork the packaging somehow.
Distro package maintainers, please do NOT include any pre-release builds, even
blessed, into operating system distros. The reasons for not doing so were very
eloquently outlined by Karl in a mail, which is summarized at the above address.
The quick version is: we don't guarantee compatibility between the pre-releases
and the final release, so if people install the release candidate, all their
repositories and working copies might break unrepairably when they upgrade to
1.5.2 proper. We don't want that kind of bad publicity, and neither do you.

Summary:
+1 to release (Unix).
Paranoia:
Verified md5sums and sha1sums.
Verified that *.bz2 and *.gz were signed with Hyrum's key 4E24517C.
Verified that *.bz2 vs *.gz uncompress to exactly the same tarball,
for both deps and non-deps.
Verified that the trees in the deps tarball exactly match the releases
they claim to match, by downloading from upstream and comparing:
apr-1.2.12, apr-util-1.2.12, neon-0.28.2, serf-0.2.0, zlib-1.2.3.
(Hyrum, there are more recent releases of the first three available;
any reason we're not using them?)
Verified that 1.5.2 configures with just "./configure" and builds
cleanly (except for those annoying uninitialized var warnings that we
can't get rid of because GCC apparently still thinks the righteous
shall inherit the earth just by emitting enough warning messages).
Verified that I am who I think I am, by checksumming my DNA sequence.
Environment:
Debian GNU/Linux ('testing' distro, very recently dist-upgraded)
Linux 2.6.25-2-686 #1 SMP Fri Jul 18 17:46:56 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Dependencies:
APR / APR-UTIL 1.2.12
Apache httpd 2.2.8
Neon 0.28.0
Serf r1190 (0.2.1, really -- my local serf comes from a working copy)
Tested:
[ fsfs ] x [ ra_local | ra_svn | ra_neon | ra_serf ]
(Installing with BDB is still broken locally for me, sigh.
I don't think that's a Subversion problem, though.)
Results:
All tests passed, except for two failures with serf only:
basic_tests.py 6: basic mkdir URL, including parent directories
copy_tests.py 25: svn cp src-URL non-existent-URL-path
I believe this is related to my using an interim version of Serf;
these two commonly fail for me. It is not a release blocker.

No. This task is done by po-update.sh which should be run by translators
before updating .po files.

No, I think he means this only for changes that can obviously be made
by someone who doesn't speak the target languages - the example here is
changing 2 spaces to 1 space in the middle of a string.
If you actually change the meaning of a string, that's different.

I think what Hyrum is doing is asking for a volunteer (perhaps a current
translator) to take over this aspect of the release process and notify
the translators. Could you do that?
Then only one translator has to watch the list, instead of all the
translators watching.

In other words, every time a developer changes a msg string, they should
search for it in all the PO files and change it there too?
Is that the task we're talking about? I want to make sure I understand
before I comment further; but if that's accurate, it sounds like a
non-starter to me. We can't afford that kind of overhead on changes,
especially since so many changes involve changing a string. We'd need
to find another way to unfuzzy.

So you assume that translators are following the list? I currently do
but recently I unsubscribed more than ten lists and sometime I will do
so for Subversions one as well.
There are only few releases of Subversion per year so please consider
contacting contributors if the translation is not up-to-date.

Please try to fix this in all PO files as well. Just search for this
string and adapt it. Otherwise 10 or more people have to do it
individually and this requires a much higher work than doing it once for
all.
(In this rare case also the translation in the msgstr entry should be
updated (removing a space requires no knowledge of it) but normally it
is sufficient to adapt msgid entries for English typo fixes ...)
Not unfuzzying is also the reason that often previously up-to-date
translations are incomplete in a release. It's easy to avoid ...

I've been announcing the release for a couple of weeks now, and the date is
posted on the roadmap page. From that, we leave it to the individual
translation teams to update the translations on their own. I don't think it
necessary for them to receive personalized release announcements. And I'm

I ran it five times each with [bdb | fsfs] x [neon] and it passed

Hi All,
I used the bz2 source and deps files.
I built with the following ./configure line.
./configure --prefix=/home/kamesh/1.5.2 --enable-javahl
- --with-jdk=/opt/jdk1.5.0_10 --with-swig=/usr/local/swig-1.3.28
- --with-berkeley-db=/usr --enable-shared --with-ssl
- --enable-maintainer-mode
- --with-junit=/home/kamesh/downloads/junit3.8.1/junit.jar
Ran the following tests.
make check * (fsfs, bdb) = All PASS
make svnserveautocheck * (fsfs, bdb) = All PASS
make davautocheck * (fsfs, bdb), ra_neon = All PASS
make davautocheck * (fsfs, bdb), ra_serf = All Pass except basic_tests-6

I use apache-2.2.6
Given that 'serf' is experimental(Or is it regression? I am not
remembering this tests to fail in the past 1.5 releases), I am +1 to
release.

SUMMARY:
+1 for release.
TESTED:
Verified md5sums and sha1sums.
Centos 4.1 i386 and x86_86:
apr 1.2.12
apr-util 1.2.12
bdb 4.6.21
neon 0.28.2
swig 1_3_25

javahl
perl 5.8.5
python 2.4.1
ruby 1.8.5
RESULTS:
All tests passed.
Compared the uncompressed tar.bz2 and tar.gz files and they match byte for byte.
Did a recursive diff between r32768 and the main distribution files and they
match minus svn:keyword differences. Did a recursive diff -ruw between the
tarballs and the zip file and they match.

Everything passed when I ran the bdb/dav tests again alone -- I'll
look at using the retry option of safe_rmtree to see if that helps in
case it's a tag-along interfering.
I built and tested the .zip file on Windows XP with VC2005 Express,
Apache 2.2.6, neon 0.27.2, BDB 4.4.20, zlib 1.2.3, and OpenSSL
0.9.8g.
All 6 test combos passed. I also built the perl, python, and javahl
bindings but did not test them. I did not use or test the
dependencies file.

DJ,
If it is an "access denied" error on one of the files within the BDB
repository I'd say it is a "known" sporadic issue that seems to happen
with the test suites. I have not been getting it since increasing the
RAM on my test machine (which may have just gave me some more head
room). Before that, I'd usually get one or two of these when running
the tests. Got them in 1.4 tests too.

I ran tests on Windows and everything passed except for a few tests
with bdb over ra_dav (neon). They fail trying to cleanup the bdb
'changes' file with 'permission denied'. Is anyone else seeing that
on Windows or is it a known issue? I haven't run bdb tests on the 1.5
series at all, I don't think, so don't know if it's a regression or
not. I'm re-running the bdb/dav tests and I'll try them with 1.5.1
tomorrow.
