IP address change of wicketstuff.org

Hi guys,

The wicketstuff.org server needs to be moved to a new IP address. The
plan is as follows:

* I give the machine the new IP address in addition to the current one,
adjust the firewall accordingly, etc.
* We test that everything works from the new IP address. For this to
work, I'll need to know what things could be influenced.
* After everything works, the DNS will need to be pointed to the new IP
address by whoever of you guys manages the wicketstuff.org domain.
* When the old DNS has vanished from all the caches, I will remove the
old IP address.

The current plan is move it this weekend.

Regards,
Sebastiaan

Well I hope they're not that evil and won't take back the IP until we
say it's ok. :-)

Anyway, it looks like everything works although there may be some
dependencies on the old IP address in some config files, and there is no
way to really test that this works with the new IP other than turning
off the old one (because now the old IP is still fully functional, so
it's kinda hard to detect the dependencies).

This weekend the DNS change should have propagated and I will remove the
old IP address. It's probably a good idea to do this when one of you
guys is online for some quick tests after I removed it. What's the best
way to do this? Should I visit the wicket IRC channel, or just ping the
mailing list?

Regards,
Sebastiaan

I think we will see the problem reports soon enough. And it is not *that*
critical a service.
Just yank out the IP. We will see the fallout soon enough :)

Considering that the DNS cache ttl on the wicketstuff.org domain is only
1 hour, it should have propagated everywhere by now.

If it's ok with you guys, I'd like to remove the old IP address from the
interface. Is that OK with you guys? Is anybody available to quickly
test to see that the public sites still work after I remove the IP address?

Re: IP address change of wicketstuff.org

Posted by Sebastiaan van Erk <se...@sebster.com>.
Hi,

I switched the machine's main IP address and made the old IP address
secondary. Everything should still work with the old IP address, but the
new IP address should work as well.

The new IP address is 213.171.70.74.

You can (mostly) test the new IP address by putting it in your hosts
file like so:

213.171.70.74 wicketstuff.org

If there are any issues, please let me know. I think some config files
need to be checked to see if there are hard references to the old IP
address (81.17.46.170). (I did a grep on the old ip address to the
/tmp/oldip.txt file, so feel free to look in that file to see if you
notice anything that needs to be changed. As far as I can tell it's
mostly irrelevant).

Martijn: the WHOIS data suggests you manage the domain. :-) After you
guys are convinced everything is working the way it's supposed to with
the new IP address, can you change the wicketstuff.org domain to resolve
to it? Then I can remove the old IP address.

Regards,
Sebastiaan
