libtool version detection
forgive me if this problem has a well-known solution, i know zip about
the autotools and couldn't find this info on the web.
subversion requires libtool 1.4.
other software (e.g., almost every freebsd port i build) requires 1.3
and doesn't seem to like 1.4.
i have been solving this problem by having 'libtool' be a symlink which
i switch back and forth. there must be a better solution...
or am i doing something wrong?

Just to add a data point as to *why* SVN requires libtool 1.4:
libtool 1.4 stores inter-library dependency information. Therefore, we can
just specify that libsvn_ra_dav is dependent upon neon. That neon dependency
propogates up to the other libraries automatically when we pull in the
libsvn_ra_dav.la. This propogation eventually ending up in either svn,
svnserve, or mod_dav_svn.
If we didn't have that feature, our linking code would be a little bit more
complicated. Every library along the way would have to know that
libsvn_ra_Dav is dependent upon neon.
All of that said, I think build.conf has enough information to generate those
dependencies with some autoconf magic that 1.3 could be used.
But, it probably isn't worth the hassle. =-) -- justin

I run FreeBSD at home and keep a 1.4 libtool (and other tools) in
$HOME/local. Whenever I compile subversion I just prepend $HOME/local to
my path (as it usually isn't there).

To each his own. Futzing with the PATH is quicker ;-)

I've been building svn on FreeBSD for years. I simply build libtool
1.4 by hand, install it, and keep it around most of the time.
Whenever I want to build a new port, I
cd /usr/ports/devel/libtool
make deinstall && make reinstall
Then after the port is built, I go back into my libtool-1.4 tree and
run 'make install' again.
Kind of annoying, but not too big a deal.

Yup. The freebsd port makefiles check not only the version, but also
that it's the freebsd port version of libtool.

I install libtool 1.4 in my home directory, and make sure that the
path for root has /usr/local/bin right at the beginning.
