With new client compatibility in {{0.10.2}} we did add some startup broker version verification code -- this might resolve this issue, too. But I am not sure -- at least I think it related. Can anyone verify (\cc [~gwenshap]). Cf. https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/2403
