Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 possible issue related to chunk size
Hi all,
I originally posted this to user@, but was directed to post to this
list as a more appropriate venue. Could y'all take a look and tell me
what might be the matter?
Regards,
Will

Hi,
Please be kind, I've tried a bunch of stuff (including the
ac_cv_func_poll=no workaround from the FAQ) to correct this problem,
all to no avail.
Problem:
Unable to check out repository using HTTP - works fine using file:///
SVN Error:
svn: REPORT request failed on '/svn/!svn/vcc/default'
svn: REPORT of '/svn/!svn/vcc/default': Could not read chunk size:
connection was closed by server. (http://localhost:8080)
Platform:
Mac OS X 10.4.3 (Tiger)
15" Powerbook 1.5Ghz with 1 GB RAM
XCode 2.2
powerpc-apple-darwin8-gcc-4.0.1
Apache 2.0.55
Subversion 1.2.3

Apr-util 0.9.7
Apr and Apr-util 0.9.7 built from source
from the release notes:
*) Fix issue with poll() followed by net I/O yielding EAGAIN on
Mac OS 10.4 (Darwin 8). [Wilfredo Sanchez]

./configure --enable-mods-shared=most --enable-ssl --with-mpm=worker
--without-berkeley-db --with-apr=/usr/local/apr --with-apr-util=/usr/

I checked the httpd binary linkages:
$ otool -L /usr/local/apache2/bin/httpd
/usr/local/apache2/bin/httpd:
/usr/local/apr/lib/libaprutil-0.0.dylib (compatibility
version 10.0.0, current version 10.7.0)
/usr/local/apr/lib/libexpat.0.dylib (compatibility version
2.0.0, current version 2.0.0)
/usr/local/apr/lib/libapr-0.0.dylib (compatibility version

ssl --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-zlib --enable-swig-
bindings=no --without-berkeley-db --with-apr=/usr/local/apr --with-
apr-util=/usr/local/apr
NOTE: I have built apr, apr-util, httpd and svn with ac_cv_func_poll
set to no and unset as well.
I configured the dav stuff in httpd.conf
added
<Location /svn>
DAV svn
SVNPath /path/to/repos

make install added these lines to httpd.conf
LoadModule dav_svn_module modules/mod_dav_svn.so
LoadModule authz_svn_module modules/mod_authz_svn.so
I tested svn in the browser
http://localhost:8080/svn and everything looked ok.
I tested svn from the bash prompt
$ svn co http://localhost:8080/svn/trunk .

Finally, I rebuilt apache and subversion with --enable-maintainer-
mode in the hopes of capturing a trace, but the error doesn't occur
with these builds...
I ran
$ sudo gdb httpd
gdb>run -X
but the error didn't occur when I checked out the repository, so I
just ran
$ sudo /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start
and was able to successfully check out the repository without error,
repeatedly.
I would rather not be running with maintainer mode, but if that's the
best solution, I'll keep doing it. I would appreciate any insight or
assistance y'all could provide.
Thanks,
Will

Oh, and I see that the code has 256*1024 asterisks, which IS longer
than the 8k, but maybe I'm supposed to run the thing differently?

I'd love to, but when I run:
testapp myip myport
I get:
broken pipe
in the access log:
myip - - [27/Nov/2005:14:44:09 -0600]
"****lotsandlotsmoreasterisks************" 414 341
in the error log:
[Sun Nov 27 14:44:09 2005] [error] [client myip] request failed: URI
too long (longer than 8190)
What am I doing wrong?

That test program completes without error for me on 8.2.0; it might not
be a valid test.

Hmm. If you have a second, could you please check out the test program
described in this message from dev@apr.apache.org:
<http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/apr-dev/200511.mbox/%3cFA97416D-6CBF-4DFE-9CAE-9E06772A9434@apache.org%3e>
You really may still be triggering this bug - but, none of us can produce it
on 10.4.3. If you can with 10.4.3, then we should try to isolate why you can
and we can't.

Michael,
Thanks for checking into it. I built with --with-mpm=worker based on
instructions from the article, "Getting Control with Subversion and
Xcode." http://developer.apple.com/tools/subversionxcode.html
The article leaves quite a bit to be desired from a technical
perspective, but nevertheless prompted me to make my repos available
via http, something I had been planning, but never doing...
Of course, it 'should' work... but if I had a dollar for every time I
heard that one :(

Paul, I believe you are correct - it looks like a different bug. I was
too quick in ascribing this report to the many (many) reports I had addressed
in the past about the SVN and OSX 10.4 problems.
I wonder - I have not built mpm=worker on my test box in some time. I
should try that to see what I can find.
Sorry for being so quick to answer without checking all of the details.

I'm pretty well convinced that this is a separate issue. (Although
it might be related.) I tried all the fixes and patches I could find
that relate to the select/poll 64k bug you're talking about. I tried
them against Apache 2.0.54 and 2.0.55 (the latest). The crashes I
experienced only went away when I removed "--with-mpm=worker" from
the Apache configure command line.
Maybe multi-threading exposes the select/poll bug in a way that isn't
covered by the fix that got in to 2.0.55. Or maybe it's a completely
different, unknown bug!

Michael,
Thanks for the link, that explains what's happening. However, I'm not
sure that the 'fix' is in... Certainly, it doesn't appear to be
working in my build. We'll have to wait and see if it's corrected in
the next version. In the meantime, I'm going to try Paul's suggestion
of removing the --with-mpm=worker flag, as that seems related to the
fact that it will execute ok in the debugger single process mode, run
-X and with the maintainer flag on - not sure what all that does, but
it 'works'.
Thanks,
Will

This is a "known" issue with OS-X 10.4 and Apache 2.0.x...
The issue is actually both complex and simple at the same time. There
are fixes to the Apache code that address the issue. It mainly has to
do with the Apache 2.0.x server early termination of longer I/O writes
on Mac OS-X 10.4 - but the code path clearly shows that it could happen
in other conditions but clearly has not been seen to happen.
See http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34332
(note that it is marked as "fixed" - it depends on the build of Apache
you have (2.0.55 should be good but I am not 100% sure on that)

Re: Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 possible issue related to chunk size
Posted by Paul Sturm <st...@branewave.com>.
Try removing "--with-mpm=worker" from your Apache configure
parameters. I was having the same problem and that fixed it for me.
AFAIK, "--with-mpm=worker" configures Apache to use a multi-threading
strategy, while the default is a pre-fork mult-process strategy. So
something about the threading makes it crash Apache. I didn't
investigate it any further. Although I'm sure it doesn't have
anything to do with chunk size -- that's just what the client was
expecting when the server crashed. The server never got around to
sending anything, as far as I could tell.
FYI here's how I built it (Mac OS X 10.4.3). I was also able to get
it to work without the ldap, ssl, and deflate stuff.
#!/bin/sh
tar xvjf httpd-2.0.55.tar.bz2
tar xvjf subversion-1.2.3.tar.bz2
cd httpd-2.0.55
./configure --without-berkeley-db --enable-so --enable-dav \
--enable-ssl --with-ldap --enable-ldap --with-auth-ldap --enable-auth-
ldap \
--enable-mods-shared=most --enable-deflate
make
sudo make install
cd ../subversion-1.2.3
./configure --prefix=/usr/local \
--mandir=/usr/local/share/man --with-ssl \
--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-zlib \
--enable-swig-bindings=no --without-berkeley-db \
--with-apr=/usr/local/apache2 \
--with-apr-util=/usr/local/apache2
make
sudo make install
