Nutch Wothout Hadoop

While running Nutch-0.9 with Hadoop, I was unable to see my log4j messages in my IndexingFilter plugin.  Will I be able to see my log4j messages if I run without Hadoop?  How do I get Nutch to run without Hadoop?
