Bi-monthly Meetings?
Hi devs,
What to others think about having bi-monthly community IRC meetings and/or phone call to discuss plans, priorities, and upcoming releases? I would propose every 2nd and 4th week of the month at a time that is reasonable for the community.
@demobox, is this something you could run with as the project lead? Can we figure out how to make this happen starting in February?

I can see the value of the IRC, but not to discuss plans and that
stuff. As Ross pointed out, in the ASF, everything must be done in the
mailing list, otherwise it never happened. This is one of the gold
rules of the ASF, and we need to be careful about respecting the
established procedures.
That said, the IRC is a very good place to have discussions about code
reviews, design, implementation and that kind of things. Also to start
some PoCs with new stuff, experiments, etc. We also have the channel
logs [1], so people in different timezones can read the discussions
later, if interested.
That shouldn't make the IRC the place to make decisions, though. IMO
it would be good to define the plans, roadmap, etc, in the mailing
list, and the IRC can be used as a discussion room, when needed, about
the implementation details, as it is more agile to share code, links,
etc.
I.

Thanks for the insight, Ross!

I can ask questions of multiple people simultaneously via a mailing list. In fact I am asking that question of everyone who cares not a subset who can spare a specific timeslot, potentially when they should be asleep.
There is a reason ASF projects don't encourage synchronous meetings. It's OK to have them, but be aware that they are exclusionary and typically bad practice.
If the team go ahead then remember no decisions can be made in these meetings, only proposals can be drawn up to be brought to this list.

The value I see in something like this is being able to ask questions of multiple people simultaneously and coordinate/expedite decisions.
For example:
- releases: what, when, how
- specific decisions (such as the recent wiki change)
- priorities (ie are more people interested in blobstore test fixes rather than the compute test fixes)
How do we decide as a community if something like irc meetings would be useful? Maybe we should have an IRC meeting about it :) I know some big communities do it, but I would really like to hear some more feedback from people before we try it!
(Also thanks Andrew for offering to help) -Zack

If we decide to do this, I'm happy to figure out how to make this happen, and to find out what kind of "housekeeping" in terms of taking notes etc. would be needed.
Before we consider this, though: could you give some more details on how you think this might help? Specifically, what this would help achieve that we're not handling well now.
I'm mainly asking because, with the timezone differences across the community as they are, I don't expect this to be particularly easy to arrange.
