svn update inside a postcommit script

We want to keep a working copy of our repo up-to-date (for an automated
build system).
We find that we are getting " '.' is locked" type messages when we
manually update in the working folder (usually when we
notice that the automated update doesn't seem to have worked.

Is it the case that svn keeps the parent dir of a working-copy file
locked until _after_ the postcommit has run, thus somehow preventing the
svn update from running ?

Thanks
	rob
