[Studio] Bug with Mac version of Directory Studio

Hi folks,

If this is the wrong place to report this, I apologise in advance. There is
no clear and easy way to raise a bug for this app it seems.

I am running into a persistent bug with Apache Directory Studio.

I use it for a minute or two and it beach balls and I have to force quit it
and restart it. I can’t see anything specific I’m doing to cause the app to
crash, it seems random. I haven’t updated it.

The most recent version doesn’t work at all on my mac (I am
running 10.10.4), I am currently running the previous version of Apache
Directory Studio.

Let me know what I can provide to help fix this.

Have you tested the latest build ?

I am not at home right now so I can't post the error, but basically I used Java 7, I installed the latest version and the blue Apache directory studio square comes up to show the app is loading up, then it crashes before starting and tells me to read the logs, I believe there is nothing in the logs either when I checked IIRC. I tried then upgrading Java to Java 8 and the same thing happens. I tried upgrading both the app and Java as the previous versions do not work, they start, but after a few minutes the beach ball happens and it crashes and I have to force quit the app.

Re: [Studio] Bug with Mac version of Directory Studio

This seems to have fixed it:

luca at Lucas-MBP in ~
$ /usr/libexec/java_home -V
Matching Java Virtual Machines (3):
    1.8.0_51, x86_64: "Java SE 8"
/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_51.jdk/Contents/Home
    1.6.0_65-b14-466.1, x86_64: "Java SE 6"
/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
    1.6.0_65-b14-466.1, i386: "Java SE 6"
/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home

/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_51.jdk/Contents/Home

I can successfully run the new version now. Apparently you need the JDK,
not the JRE version of Java 8 which I had installed. Thank you so much.

PS - nice to see Apache DS has been updated to work nicely on retina
display :)

Ok, so no Java 8 is there.

Please go to Oracle website [1] and download JDK 8 (filename is
"jdk-8u51-macosx-x64.dmg") and install it.

Then run the command again and paste the output please.

Stefan

Maybe, but it will take time ;)

Still it is possible to get the current version running on your Mac.
We'll guide you :)

Let's start. Please enter the following into your console and post the
result:

    /usr/libexec/java_home -V

Looked at the Windows 64bit and it seems to me the
ApacheDirectoryStudio.ini is missing the -Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.7
directive to make sure the JVM selection process will pick up the proper JVM

this is not necessarily what is on your path, cause this check is based on
the java plugin version
registered in your browser.

the reliable test is to run the command

java -version

in your terminal and see the version reported there

Would it be the case, it woudl also crash on my mac...

Mac OSX is very nasty when it comes to select teh Java version to use.
Typically, Apple was providing Java up to version 6, then it was Oracle.

Please check on https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_mac.xml#havejava

Re: [Studio] Bug with Mac version of Directory Studio

Posted by Luca Sokoll <lu...@linaro.org>.
uninstalling java 8 and trying java 7 didn't work. you may be right in
that Apache DS is looking at the default Mac java version which is:

luca at Lucas-MBP in ~
$ java -version

java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-466.1-11M4716)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-466.1, mixed mode)

If I run a version check on the java site, I get:

Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 8 Update 51).

So I'm not sure what's going on here. All I originally did was uninstall
the old version of Apache DS, and install the most recent one - and it
crashed as described, so I updated java to see if it fixed the issue, it
didn't. I have done nothing abnormal whilst 'upgrading' Apache DS, so I
believe it more so on the Apache DS development side that's causing this.

Cheers,
Luca

On OS-X, run

	/usr/libexec/java_home -V

to list all available JVMs,

	/usr/libexec/java_home -v

to return the current default JVM, and

	export JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8)

to set the default version to use (to Java 8 in this example, use "-v 1.7" for Java 7, obviously).

I guess it's something like that. There are 2 Java installation on his
machine, with a Path that points to the oldest version.

Which is the same version reported by the eclipse log. In this command, he
does not specify the absolute path to the java command, leading me to
believe this is the first java found by the path variable. Perhaps he just
needs to either edit the ApacheDirectoryStudio.ini to specify which java
install to use (not recommended), or better yet, update his PATH
environment variable.

Java 7 is required.

For the record, in my first mail, I asked you the version of Java you
were using, and your response was :
`
"

No worries.

$ /Library/Internet\
Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -version
java version "1.8.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-b14)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode)

"

For some unknown reason, it's not the version you are running Studio with (as shown by the logs you provided), so there must be something weird on your setup, but it's hard to tell what can be wrong.

Please test it with either Java 7 or Java 8 (and check in the first lines of the log if this is the version which is used by Eclipse), and tell us if it's ok. A JIRA has been created to try to improve the error message, because it's quite a pain to go through that many mails to finally find out what's wrong...

Thanks !

Hi Luca,

for Studio 2.0.0-M9 please just use the latest Java 8, 64bit. Maybe it
also requires the full JDK, not only the JRE, I'm not sure right now.

After work I'll test the installation on my old Mac and update the
installation instructions.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

No, as I have said several times. The newest version does not work at all.

I start the application, the Apache DS little loading screen comes up and
then it crashes immediately and tells me to check the log file.

This is the error:

The log is attached.

If not, please exactly describe what's the error is. Does it start? Does

Yes, that is correct, this is also describe in the "Installation"
section of the download page [1]. We changed our whole build system, so
currently there is no .dmg, maybe in a later version we can provide one.

For 2.0.0-M9 you need at least Java 7 (64 bit), Java 6 won't work.

Weird. When I download the latest version, it downloads a zip file that extracts the .app itself into my downloads folder which I then have to move to the applications folder, there is no .dmg file as before - is that correct or am I downloading the wrong thing?

Re: [Studio] Bug with Mac version of Directory Studio

No worries.

$ /Library/Internet\
Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -version
java version "1.8.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-b14)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode)

I recently updated java to the latest version to see if it would help the
issue, but it didn't make any difference. I believe the previous version I
was on was:

$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-466.1-11M4716)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-466.1, mixed mode)

Sorry, I misse dthe fact that the new build crashes on you.

What version of Java are you using ?
