Sorry to bug you with that... I've been compiling beta for a while now and
it never happened till 2.0.32.
As you can see, I just did a full reinstall of libexpat... Same error.
If you still think its a system problem... I'll look into it myself.

Okay, if you can check out the latest CVS copy of apr-util, it
should work now - I added the necessary bits to support the
textproc/expat and textproc/expat2 ports.
This will be included in the next release of Apache 2.0.

No, we don't. The change to apr-util fixes everything because those
other locations use the value that apr-util exports. You just have
to re-run configure for the entire tree. -- justin

The problem that occured in srclib/apr-util is fixed.
What I am saying is that the SAME problem occurs other places that you
didn't fix yet because I didn't tell you that it happened there as well.
Basically anytime you use libexpat.la which the below compilations do, it
breaks.
So you must make the "same" changes in these additional places as well.

I'm not sure what you are saying here - is it fixed or not with
my latest commits?
Once you patch apu-conf.m4, run buildconf, and re-run configure, all
should be well. Is that not what you are seeing? I'm not sure how
pcre fits in - if there are any references to libexpat.la, it is
indirectly coming from apr-util's value.

Sorry about this... its my fault... I neglected to mention, that it
happens anwywhere in the code that libexpat.la is used.
The changes for the apr-util worked fine. If you make the
same changes for the following additional files, I think all will be well.
[See bottom for list.]
If you would like make output, let me know. I would go through and make
the same changes you made to apu-conf.m4 myself, but looking at the pcre
directory, it might be a little harder for me to find.
If your interested, I actually have 2.0.32 up and running on FBSD4.5 on
port 9595 (the one where I manually link libexpat.a where it fails)
One small problem with this though... apachectl script has the path to
httpd wrong in apachectl.in

OKAY here what I did
Its expat version 1.95.2 w/ no patches applied.
It is the uptodate port for FreeBSD as of the time of this e-mail
cd /usr/ports/textproc/expat
make deinstall
cd ../expat2
make install distclean
ls /usr/local/lib/libe*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel - 145964 Feb 27 03:36:28 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.a
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 13 Feb 27 03:36:27 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so@ -> libexpat.so.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 126411 Feb 27 03:36:27 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so.1*
I notice it didn't install libexpat.la
So I do it manually
cd work/expat-1.95.2/lib
/bin/sh ../libtool --mode=install /usr/bin/install -c -o root -g wheel
libexpat.la /usr/local/lib/libexpat.la
ls /usr/local/lib/libe*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel - 145964 Feb 27 03:40:33 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.a
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 643 Feb 27 03:36:59 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.la*
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 13 Feb 27 03:40:33 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so@ -> libexpat.so.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 126411 Feb 27 03:40:33 2002 /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so.1*

the 4.4 was a complete default install with just

The other two had expat1.2 deinstalled and expat1.95.2 installed.

Oh, wait a sec, that's expat-1.2. Ooooh. We're expecting expat-lite
(which is 1.95.x).
Ah, can you try installing the expat2 port? *That's* the right
version for FreeBSD it seems. -- justin

cd /usr/ports/textproc/expat [expat-1.2.tar.gz]
As you can see it didn't install the libexpat.la file. Well I guess you were
right... It wasn't compiled with libtool ? How did that happen ? The port
version is identical to the one used on FreeBSD4.5, but it installed
libexpat.la.
Good grief... only more questsions.
I could try it on a different 4.5 box as well if your interested ?

This is very odd. This looks like a libtool error perhaps.
Can you reproduce this on any other machines? I'm kind of
doubtful we're doing anything wrong, but geesh. -- justin
