On my macbook the deployAsyncService.sh script fails to start f the UIMA_HOME contains a whitespace.
Here the error messsage:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
2/config/Logger/properties
In that case UIMA_HOME="/Users/kottmann/Downloads/apache-uima-as 2"
