The error message isn't very clear today when the source doesn't have a channel. Also, it should log as ERROR, not WARN
This is the error I am getting due to lack of any channels on my source:
2012-08-17 04:14:53,035 (conf-file-poller-0) [WARN - org.apache.flume.conf.FlumeConfiguration$AgentConfiguration.validateSources(FlumeConfiguration.java:571)] Removed src-0 due to Failed to configure component!

I have the same thing for a Sink I was trying to configure. In FlumeConfiguration.java:668 it logs as a warning "Configuration empty for: " + sinkName + ".Removed." It'd be great if this could also log the ConfigurationException log message and/or stacktrace it'd be much, much easier to figure out what the issues are with the Sink configuration problems. Likely the Source, Channel, and Agent sections could use a similar type of love there.

I had the same problem for a sink. In general, the errors in the config are not being logged. I've modified a couple of files to fix this. Here is an example of what it would log:
2012-08-31 13:49:27,449 WARN properties.PropertiesFileConfigurationProvider: Error in configuration file '/etc/flume-ng/conf/flume.conf' : [avro-sink - channel [ERROR] : PROPERTY_VALUE_NULL]
