What is the status of the development to support Creole?

Hey All,

I've been working lately to integrate JSPwiki (great software, btw)
with Liferay Portal and have become increasingly interested in the
support for Creole. Based on the WikiCreole website, JSPwiki supports
version 0.6 [1]. Are there plans to support version 1.0? Based on a
post [2] by Christoph Sauer it's already supported. Could you confirm
that?

Also, based on a previous post by Christoph[3], there are plans to
implement a direct renderer of WikiCreole as opposed to the current
mixed-mode filter. If this still going to be done? If so, what is its
status?

Finally there are some minor issues that I've found when using the
filter with the test cases for creole:
- URLs are not automatically converted
- The constructions foo://bar makes 'bar' become cursive and it shouldn't
- Lists that become with spaces (before the asterisk or hash) are not
correctly rendered
- Multi line lists are not properly rendered. The second line is not
included in the LI
- Images are not inserted (instead it interprets it as a plugin and fails)

Are these known issues?

Best regards,

Jorge

Yup, absolutely. I think Creole is a good idea, and I would very
much like to have it a native component instead of a filter. AND to
have someone support it... As I don't use it myself, I've got less
incentive in keeping it going.

(Having said that, I should probably strip out the WebDAV stuff out
of the core as well.)

Hi all,

I just wanted to say, in case anyone is interested, that I've fixed
the problems listed in my previous email (they were my fault). The
Creole Filter distribution by i3g works just fine and Liferay Portal
will be using it from now on.

Thanks Christoph,
Jorge

Hi Christoph,

I've downloaded and tried out this version, but it doesn't properly
convert links and headers. I've attached a screenshot which shows the
result of the Creole test case.

I found out that the problem was actually in Creole's test cases as
they are using the following syntax to insert an image:

[{ImagePro src='Red-Flower.jpg' caption='here is a red flower' }]

Instead of what it should be:

{{Red-Flower.jpg|here is a red flower}}

Once I noticed this and changed to the correct syntax everything
worked fine. I've also added a note in wikicreole.org letting them
know about this potential mistake.

Thanks for your help,
Jorge

AW: What is the status of the development to support Creole?

Posted by Christoph Sauer <sa...@hs-heilbronn.de>.
I've uploaded a external implementation of the filter (binaries and
sourceode at
http://www.i3g.hs-heilbronn.de/Wiki.jsp?page=JSPWikiCreoleFilter)

I also changed the documentation at
http://www.jspwiki.org/wiki/WikiCreole which reflects that
the filter will now be externally maintained (outside the core)

The code has the current status of the filter in the JSPWiki core.
In the source you will find an experimental JSPWikiToCreole converter.
This will hopefully enable us to convert JSPWiki repositories (also mixed
mode ones) to Creole once we have a native parser. I haven't tested it
myself however, but it shows that we are preparing for the time after the
filter ;) Use at your own risk.

>What puzzles me is why is it looking for the plugin 'ImagePro' if I
>configured 'Image'. May that be related to the problem?

I've added a debug var <<$creolepagefilter.imageplugin>> that let you find
out what image plugin is used, if it displays "Image" everything should be
fine, "ImagePro" was just an experimental name like ImageX to see if it
would work to switch Image display implementations. Please install the new
external filter and tell me if this displays something else than you defined

in your properties...

Hi Christoph,

Thanks a lot for your answer. Knowing that you are still interested in
JSPWiki's support for Creole is very good news indeed.

Please, find some answers to your comments below.

Yup, fully agreed :)

I know exactly what you mean. Liferay Portal is Open Source too and we
some times depend on companies funding the developments. In fact the
integration of JSPWiki to support Creole is being funded by a company.
I hope that with this work we'll also help increase the visibility of
Creole and maybe that will bring more funding to support it natively.
If that happens, I'll let you know.

Thanks, that's very useful.

I copied the contents from the wiki directly to my jspwiki.properties
file. Specifically for the image configuration I have:

creole.imagePlugin.name = Image

But when testing Creole with the TestCase from wikicreole.org it
doesn't work and I see this in the logs (sorry, part of it is in
Spanish):

14:29:59,275 INFO [JSPWikiMarkupParser:1411] Failed to insert plugin:
No se pudo encontrar el plugin ImagePro

What puzzles me is why is it looking for the plugin 'ImagePro' if I
configured 'Image'. May that be related to the problem?

Jorge

AW: What is the status of the development to support Creole?

Posted by Christoph Sauer <sa...@hs-heilbronn.de>.
Hi Jorge,

The filter is part of the core code right now, but since I don't have anyone
to maintain it, and it does not fully support Creole 1.0 it is not labelled
as an official feature in the latest stable.

I didn't write the filter, it was done by students for our i3G institute
that now all are employed in companies that do not see the value of wikis
right now. Since they are not using JSPWiki personally therefore they have
probably no motivation to maintain it.

However we are using Creole on all our wikis with this filter. It was tested
thoroughly and has proven to be stable. Therefore I have a strong interest
to maintain the filter. Like Janne and others I would now prefer a native
implementation over the filter. First because it is faster, second because
documents saved in mixed mode are not portable.

The bottom line is that I WILL sooner or later implement a native renderer
for it, if nobody else does. I've worked for more than a year now with
creole and I don't want to go back to JSPWiki markup anymore. I really like
it and it is much easier to convince people to use it because you can say
"it's almost like Wikipedia markup, just without it's inconsistencies" ;-).

However since the filter works fine for us right now I have other more

Janne, because of the above reasons I've got no problem if you don't want to
have the filter in the core anymore. I am happily maintaining it as a
separate package. Important for me is that the JSPWiki project shows that it
would support Creole if there would be a decent renderer and someone who
actively supports it. And I think that was, and is your message, Janne. I am
very sorry that I am currently not able to provide this.

Jorge, I've added a section know issues to [[JSPWiki:CreolePageFilter]]. All
your mentioned points are know Issues except the Image problem. Did you
check if the you used the right imagePlugin declaration in the properties?

Yes, but I personally have more pressing things to worry about. So I
would really, really, really want someone to take it their priority
to carry it forward.

Unfortunately, keeping it in the core means that the code will rot
inside the repository, and won't be at all up-to-date in the future.
Bugs won't be fixed and other things. And if the code is buggy, it's
probably then easier to rip it out and drop it than to have the
errors haunting the project.

Ok, I'll wait for his answer.

BTW, what is your personal position in Creole. Do you think it's
interesting enough to take its support further in JSPwiki?

That would be bad news for me. One of the main reasons to pick JSPwiki
(besides its functionality and good community) is its support for
Creole. Taking it out of the core, if there isn't any active
developer, would most probably mean to let it die :(

Yup - mixed mode is really quite evil, as once you use it, you can't
really go back. However, unless Christoph has some folks stacked
somewhere working on this, I don't think anybody else has worked on
it at all.

No idea... I'm half-tempted to rip out the CreoleFilter out of the
core anyway, as it seems that we have nobody who is interested in or
capable of keeping it up and current. It might better that it was
developed as a separate module.
