Difficult layout...?

Hi all,

I've been told to format a document as follows:

<page>
<single_column>blahblahblah</single_column>
<two_columns>blahblahblah blahblahblah blahblahblah</two_columns>
<single_column>blahblahblah</single_column>
<two_columns>blahblahblah blahblahblah blahblahblah</two_columns>
</page>

ie alternating between some text in a single column and some text in two.
Is this possible? If so, would somebody please be kind enough to help me
write the fo?

Thanks,

John Morrison.

Well, as a change from figuring out what fo:inline content is supposed to do
it's nice... :-)

I think we can all think of situations where we would like to do some things
on an FO basis, like this, where right now we can't, and also, on an area
basis, where right now we can't. Dave Pawson has speculated that an
extension mechanism for attaching extra behaviour (like modifying content
styling) to page transitions could be useful, and this is an example of the
latter. Basically there is not yet the perfect matchup, in XSL 1.0, between
FOs and properties, and areas and traits. I get the sense that the WG is
aware of most of these.

Yes, that's what I was referring to (as tortuous ;-).

But I think the spec should be extended to handle arbitrary columnization on
a per-fo:-block basis. But mayhaps this is not the place to discuss this
topic.

It's doable right now, but it's alpha code. Specify column-count="2" on the
region-body, then switch between span="none" and span="all" on the
fo:block's in question.

The main problem is that my balancing algorithm is crude; it overcompensates
for the height of the multicolumn spans when reflowing, and what happens is
that the columns are inequal.

I have an idea what I missed (it has to do with DisplaySpaces) and when I
pry loose some time will tackle this again.

It's not natural, and (if doable) requires some tortuous spanning blocks.

I think the standard falls short here--it seems to me that *any* block
should be able to specify the number of columns involved.
