[users@httpd] apache + oracle + php

Hello....

I have the next problem:

I've compiled php for supporting Oracle 9. And apache supporting php....

All works fine (more or less).

I the typical script for starting apache, it's very similar to this:

$ORACLE_HOME=blahblahblah
$ORACLE_SID=ORA
..... more variables.....
case "$1" in
  start)
     /opt/apache/bin/apachectl startssl
    ;;

  stop)
      /opt/apache/bin/apachectl stop
    ;;
esac

It works fine if you login as root and launch it using
/etc/init.d/apache start

But when it's executed by the init process Apache runs until you try to
ask for a php page
that connects to Oracle.... Then that apache instance dies and no more
php+Oracle pages can
be shown....

It seems to be a problem with the establishment of the variables.... But
I don't understand
where is the diference between launching it on a term or by means of the
init.

Any idea?

Thank you.

Portugues, pero tengo Castellano en la sangre :-)

For me, I insist on the permissions issue.

Check with whoever controls the database for the correct settings.
Meanwhile, you can always "chown" the script and turn it "root like" to make
sure.

Permissions go like this

user-group-other

If you have 765, it means rwxrw-rw-, in other words, everyone can read and
write, only the user that owns the file can execute it
If you have 755, it means rwxr-xr-x, so now everyone can execute but only
"user" can write.

You have two users, "oracle.orainst" and "usuario.users" (are you spanish
?).
If these are directory permissions, look at the above...

OK.... yes...

for /usr/local/oracle (and the subtree) the owner is oracle.orainst and
the permissions are 765.
for the directory where the web-pages (and the subtree) are 755 owner
usuario.users....

Do you think it will be a problem with the permissions???
I don't manage the oracle database.... so I can't access the database.

I'm still looking documentation about installation procedure, and stuff
appears to be well done.

I don't understand what you are asking. It is sending expires headers,
and that's what you want, right?

By the way, the Vary: Accept-Encoding header is probably preventing
browsers from caching. You may want to see what is generating that.

Hi & thanks Joshua.

Hmm, I should have checked this first -- directly on the image. It seems like it is caching then but the time needs to be advanced greatly. So, does this look alright?

But lets check this PNG:

Hello, I have mod_expires loaded and the following settings for two of my sites (computercops.biz & nukecops.com):

<IfModule mod_expires.c>
  <Directory /path/to/computercops>
    ExpiresActive On

</VirtualHost>

<IfModule mod_expires.c>
  <Directory /path/to/nukecops>
    ExpiresActive On
    ExpiresByType image/gif "access plus 1 hour"
    ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access plus 1 hour"
  </Directory>
  <FilesMatch "\.jpg$">
    ExpiresActive On
    ExpiresDefault A3600
  </FilesMatch>
</IfModule>
</VirtualHost>

This is a telnet sessions to nukecops.com on port 80:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004 14:32:38 GMT
Server: Apache
Vary: Accept-Encoding
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.3RC2-dev
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/html

I found this thread: http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&th=aab8ccae2d489c15,7 and am curious as to what the settings should be since the date on it is rather dated. The images are not being cached at either site and its causing slow page loads on the client side at times.

Also please note that I have mod_rewrite enabled as well.

Thanks

Hi and thanks for the answer.....

But I'm changing a server (and a Site) that was working fine to other
machine.... So the php code should be OK..... because it was working in
the old
machine (the new machine has the same name and IP, the old one was
de-plugged from the net).

The script works fine... and variables are only established if you run
it from an xterm.....

I can't understand why the new instances created to serve new requests
related to php + Oracle die if /etc/init.d/apache is launched during
the boot process.

I think I have a very basic error anywhere. But I don't know where....

Hi

I think your problem is that you start variable name with a number.
AFAIK you can't declare variables in PHP which starts with a number.

Re: [users@httpd] apache + oracle + php

Posted by Luis Moran Ochoa <lu...@seresco.es>.
for /usr/local/oracle (and the subtree) the owner is oracle.orainst and
the permissions are 755.
for the directory where the web-pages (and the subtree) are 755 owner
usuario.users....

Do you think it will be a problem with the permissions???
I don't manage the oracle database.... so I can't access the database.

I'm still looking documentation about installation procedure, and stuff
appears to be well done.

I created the script as root and the link too...

When you create the script and the link, which user are you ? Apache or
root?
When the script and the link get created, with what permissions do they stay
?

Luis

Yes.... I forgot to say I'm using RedHat 9 (it's not my choice), php
4.3.4 and Oracle 9 (it isn't my choice neither).

After variables defintions I export all of them.... ORACLE_HOME=xxxxxxx;
export $ORACLE_HOME;

The only malfunction I detected is this.

I followed some documentation to install it...... And in relation to
rights, apache user belongs to oinstall group...
and user apache has the necesary rights to access the web page files.

If I put that script into /etc/init.d/ and create a symbolic link like
/etc/rc5.d/S99apache to it...
when I boot the machine , doesn't the script execute as root user???

Besides, apache doesn't raise any kind of error, the primary instance of
http is running as root, and the ones created
for serving the requests run as user apache.... In both cases (if I
launch the script manually or from init).

You are using UNIX, right ?
One thing is to start a process as "root", which has all priviledges, and
another to start it as "Apache", which is a specific user, that does not
have all the rights, to open and/or create files.

Check the permissions for the directories you have to open.
