Problem reading a generated excel file with Excel

Hi,

We have a program here that reads records from a database and generates an
excel spreadsheet using POI-HSSF.
However, we found that after a certain number of records, Excel is unable to
open the generated file. It just dies with error "Unable to read file" I'm
not sure if it's the same, but there's a similar problem reported in
http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.comp.jakarta.poi.user/month=20030701

Now, the weird thing is, the offending file can be opened using the latest
version of Open Office. (Wow, it means OO is already better than Excel!)
Excel 97 and 2000 cannot open the file at all. Excel 2002 attempts to repair
the file.

I'm not sure where to begin checking. I tried checking the ASF Bugzilla if
it was a known problem, but the search screen doesn't see to be working for
me ATM. (clicking Search does nothing)

Does anyone have an idea?
