Summary: GDBM not supported in 2.2.4?
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.2.4
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P4
         Component: mod_auth_dbm
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: paul@ensigma.com.au

I have a GDBM authentication file that works correctly in 2.0.59.

When I use 2.2.4 I get the following error:

(70023)This function has not been implemented on this platform: could not open
dbm (type GDBM) auth file: /etc/httpd/conf/users

the 2.2.4 version of dbmmanage can read the users file as expected.

I did! And therein lies what I believe to be the bug. I should have been more
explicit in my original post but, the configure line for both was:

./configure --enable-mods-shared=all --enable-authz-dbm --enable-authn-dbm
--with-gdbm --enable-speling=shared --with-ssl --enable-ssl --enable-deflate

I added the enable-auth?-dbm bits when it didn't work. Before that I had:

./configure --enable-mods-shared=all --enable-auth-dbm --with-gdbm
--enable-speling=shared --with-ssl --enable-ssl --enable-deflate

That error just means you (or whoever built your system) compiled APR-UTIL without GDBM support.

Please use a user support forum for questions of this kind.

Does this explain why 2.0.59 works fine?

(In reply to comment #6)
> Does this still make it curious that 2.0 works and 2.2 doesn't?

Yes.  Apache 2.0 used APR-0.9.  Apache 2.2 uses APR-1.x (1.2.x preferred;
earlier 1.x will build just fine but without the latest goodies). Your 0.9
build includes GDBM; your 1.x build doesn't.

> Does this explain why 2.0.59 works fine?

Yes, as your 2.0.59 simply seems to have been build with GDBM support. Add
--with-gdbm to your configure call and rebuild 2.2.4.

Comment #3 is slightly misleading, as it's APR-UTIL that needs gdbm support, and
you just rebuilt HTTPD.
