Need for a 2.0.4 release?

Hi Team,

what do you think about a 2.0.4 release? I think there were some issues
during the "holiday time" in 2.0.3 which is now fixed (something with a
component selector or so?).
So is this valid? Do we need a 2.0.4 release?

And if so, are there any open issues?

It's an OT question, but we never finished the thread of the 2.1 plan. How
long more do we plan to wait for new features?
When do we plan to announce features freeze and start stabilizing the code?

+1 for a release. Many bugs have been fixed since 2.0.3, even if there
are still some.

Of course we do.

Of course we have, 65 of them last time I checked. Also, if you monitor
user's group, you can easily collect another 10 or 20. Unfortunately, I
do not have so much time to fix all of them, so it won't be before 2.0.7
or 2.0.8 when most important bugs are fixed... But 2.0.4 is sure huge
step forward.

There is one blocker for 2.0.4 though:
http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=11400

Can you help with it?

You can use any open source tool with an apache licence, like junit,
anteater, latka ... There is a little work already done for anteater,
but I don't think that we are limited to this. For example some junit
tests with junit are also welcome.

The expected life of 2.0.x is at least a year from now I would guess,
perhaps longer. If we have tests for 2.0.x, it should be easy to
migrate them to 2.1. So it really makes sense to add tests for
2.0.x.

Have a look at Anteater (http://aft.sourceforge.net/). In CVS,
scripts/cocoon2.xml is a start at a Cocoon samples webapp regression
test. Cocoon itself has some Anteater test scripts in src/test/anteater/.

The problem historically has been that the samples keep getting
rearranged and renamed. If some sort of stability in 2.0.x has been
achieved, I'm keen help get a Gump-like, cron-driven samples testing
script going.

I hope the expected life is long since 2.1 doesn't seem to be on a release
schedule for the near future.

Wow! That's a great list of fixes. Simply for some of the XSL, sitemap and
XSP bug fixes plus the InputModules, I'd use 2.0.4.

And if I wanted to write some of those where would they
go? Is there any infrastructure or preffered open-source
testing tool?

Also what is the expected life for 2.0.x? And since
there are some major differences in 2.1.x does it
even make sens to do it for 2.0.x or at least parts
that will be deprecated.

Exactly this way - we currently have no test cases (yet?),
and the only way is to test the samples if they still work.

So a really great contribution to Cocoon would be test
cases which can be run automatically.

But for the 2.0.3 release we asked all the users to test
the version which was a success - as some interesting bugs
where found this way which could be fixed before the release.

Are there any regression test run before new release,
or is it more like: check out the branch and let us know
if anything is broken for you?
