[DRAFT] Apache Flex June 2015 Board Report
Time for another report. Can someone provide latest analytics?
Please review and comment,
-Alex
----------
Apache Flex is an application framework for easily building Flash-based
applications for mobile devices, the browser and desktop.
RELEASES
-Apache Flex SDK 4.14.1 was released on 3/30/15.
-Apache Flex BlazeDS 4.7 was released on 3/6/15.
-Apache Flex Tour De Flex Component Explorer 1.2 was released on 11/28/14.
-Apache Flex Tool API 1.0.0 was released on 11/20/14
-Apache Flex Squiggly 1.1 was released on 10/26/14
-Apache Flex Installer 3.1.0 was also released on 7/14/14.
-Apache FlexJS 0.0.2 was released on 7/17/14.
-Apache Flex FalconJX 0.0.2 was released on 7/17/14.
ACTIVITY
The past couple of months saw a dramatic increase in activity related to
FlexJS, a version of Flex that is independent from the Adobe Flash
Platform. Two new committers have joined in and at least two long-time
committers increased their participation significantly. Meanwhile, other
committers are working on the Installer, various bug fixes to other Apache
Flex releases and better Maven integration.
Adobe also donated a set of Flex documentation. That is being updated for
our web site.
Code Donation Update
-Swiz donation is still pending. The donor has not filed the paperwork.
The main issue was collecting signatures from the many major
Contributors who have all moved on to new things.
COMMUNITY
-Josh Tynjala and Kevin Godell were added as committers.
-Latest analytics include around 2000 hits per day on the website during
the work week (less on weekends). That’s about the same as previous
report.
-There were more than 10,000 installs of 4.13.0 since its release.
-More than 20,000 people have run the Tour De Flex application. Tour De
Flex is a set of examples folks use to learn how to develop Flex
applications.

To me it seems like excessive information to include that.

My understanding is that branding, trademark and legal issues need be to mentioned in the board report [1], but it is up to you as the PMC chair if you think they should be included or not.

Justin

Hmm. Didn’t think it mattered to the board. I assume we’ll get it taken
care of before publishing. What do others think?

Hi,

The words Adobe legal wanted removed / changed in order to comply with their trademark usage policy, see the last email from you in the [RESULT][VOTE] thread.
Thanks,
Justin

How about we wait a few more days to see if Bertrand or other former
mentors have opinions.

It is in the report. What issues are still unresolved?

I did intent to but have been busy with other stuff. Someone else mind doing it?

Perhaps legal@ is the best place to ask? Either way it’s still unresolved.
I also don’t see the Flex documentation donation mentioned in the report. If you add it perhaps you should mention that also has some unresolved trademark attribution / wording issues. While they should be reasonably easily sorted they are still unresolved.
Thanks,
Justin

So can I infer that you don’t have plans to write to them? I don’t want
to duplicate effort.

I thought we did resolve issues in Flex 4.14.1. We asked in the last
report whether we had to go back and fix old releases. I didn’t see a
response so I assume no. Do you want us to ask again?

Hi,

No I would of sent a draft to the list first before sending it.

Yep but either way it improtant to mention in the report especially as this has come up in board reports before.
> What do you think we should say about the IP issues?
Just that they haven’t been fully resolved/fixed.
Thanks,
Justin

Did you write to the apacheflex.com owner? My interpretation of
Bertrand’s suggestion was that we’d report once someone from the PMC tried
to contact them.
What do you think we should say about the IP issues?

I think we can drop this from the report as it’s probably never likely to happen.

A little less, there's a continuing slow / small downward trend.
> -There were more than 10,000 installs of 4.13.0 since its release.
Close to 20,000 installs. 4.14.0 + 4.14.1 have had 12,500 installs (about a 50/50 split). That we have tracked we don’t track downloads via the mirror.
FlexJS 0.02 has had about 800 tracked sucessful installs (250 in last 3 months), but gets large number of hits on the download page (currently steady at around 900/month for about a year) and perhaps downloads via that page?
For interest hits on the download page (for all time):
download binaries 60,000
download source 45,000
download utilities 40,000
download flexJS 15,000
download archive 12,000
download flex unit 8,000
download tour de flex 5,000
download squiggly 1,500
> -More than 20,000 people have run the Tour De Flex application.
It’s around 60,000 now.
We should also mention the current trademark issue with apacheflex.com and the licensing IP issues mentioned in the last board report has not been fully resolved.
Thanks,
Justin
