[~srowen] Great news! Thanks for looking at this. 

Out of my curiosity, can the tests run in JVM11 if we build Spark with JDK8? Similarly, can we run the tests in JVM8 if the Spark is built with JDK11 with Java 8 target?

For release, which version of the JDK should we use?
