portlet LDAP

hello,
 I'm trying to do a LDAP portlet, but I dont know how to begin.
I have configured the LDAP through jetspeed and its seem to work.
How can my portlet dialog with LDAP through jetspeed?
is it like :
portlet > "asking something to ldap" > jetspeed > "redirect to" > ldap
then where should I look?
or do my portlet have to dialog directly with the LDAP?
 i hope u see what i mean...
