[~pipfiddle] could you please provide the query that is failing. I was able to execute regexp_extract with Drill expressions inside them successfully. For eg:
select regexp_extract(concat('foothe', 'bar'), 'foo(.*?)(bar)', castint('2')) from dfs.`/tmp/a.json`;

Used concat and castint which are Drill expressions within regexp_extract.
