Application Server Administrator Job Description

Introduction:
Rapidly growing online managed services provider seeks an Application 
Server Administrator to lead its Web Services operations team. Position 
will be involved in designing, testing, deploying and operating the 
integrated systems hosting the companies proprietary Java-based Web 
Applications. We are seeking individuals capable of handling demanding, 
revenue critical operations. No travel, however candidates must be able 
to work nights and weekends when required to support production 
operation upgrades, maintenance, or customer deployments.

General Skills:
- Minimum 8-10 years experience in UNIX systems design, deployment, & 
operations;
- Minimum of 3 years experience in large scale java web application 
server deployment & operations;
- Ability to work well with application development teams as well as end 
users to balance needs/output;
- Ability to work independently, with minimal management, and drive 
tasks to completion;
- Strong interpersonal skills in working with other developers and 
operational IT end users;
- Ability to work under pressure and within aggressive schedules;

Functional Skills:
- Deploying, configuring, operating and optimizing large scale web 
application server architectures;
- Responsibility for mission critical, online production operations of 
N-tier web applications;
- Participating as a team member in a formal development life cycle and 
release control process.
- Must have good analytical and decision making skills

Required Technical Skills:
- Expert level knowledge of Tomcat application server
- Expert level knowledge of Tomcat Cluster technologies
- Expert level knowledge Java 2 Enterprise Edition programming language, 
JVM;
- Expert level knowledge of Sun Solaris and/or Linux operating systems;
- Expert level knowledge of session replication, java thread life cycle 
management, memory tuning and garbage collection for JVM for web 
applications
- Experience with SQL based Relational Databases (Oracle, DB2, MySQL);
- Expert level knowledge of Web Services load analysis and capacity planning

Education: BS or demonstrated technical expertise.

Responsibilities: Responsible for:
1. Operational performance of all company Web Application Service 
operations to include web based document archive for terabyte sized 
archives and multi million user payment and messaging communications
2. Evaluation, selection, deployment and management of  company web 
services system (hardware & software) architectures required to support 
service level requirements in the most cost-effective manner possible
