Indeed, the Xerces build system is woefully inadequate and needs a lot of
improvement. Issues that are really affecting the Xerces-p project include:
* requiring the XERCESCROOT environment simply to detect what the top level
source directory is
* requiring the use of the runConfigure pre-configuration

If you're willing to look into using automake, I am willing to assist in any way
I can, especially if we can eliminate the need for the above two steps on Unix
systems.
