[DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

Hello Storm developer community,

In the past year or so this project has slowed down and the Project
Management Committee [PMC] has almost no active members. The PMC chair
resigned in 2022 with due notice and noone has since volunteered to assume
those duties. I myself am an inactive PMC member.

This suggests to me that it's time to consider moving this project to the
Attic [1]. I would view this as the natural culmination of a very
successful Apache project and not as a mark of failure. There are many,
many successful and influential projects in the attic.

The alternative to moving to the attic would be to reconstitute the PMC
with *new members* of the development community willing to take on the
responsibilities of the project and reporting to the Apache Software
Foundation board.

So, please respond to this thread if you are interested in that role.
Please also respond if you believe moving to the attic is appropriate. A
vote on moving to the attic may be held on this list in the future.

Thanks you for your time,
Aaron

Hello,

I'd be happy to contribute to Apache Storm in any kind of way.
Just let me know what kind of help I could provide.
Disclaimer: I not skilled in clojure language, so Storm 1.x
maintenance is probably not something I could do efficiently, for I
can help on Java side and on "management" stuff if that helps the
community.

It might be possible to enable GitHub discussions (like Airflow did for
example) to have a plattform for Q&A and user community, which isn't
the traditional ASF way of doing. Of course, dev discussion still need
to be on the list ;)

Re: [DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

It's so sad that Storm probably will be moved to the attic. Honestly, we
have been using this great system on our prod for a few years but I face
similar problems people mentioned here as well. It looks like the community
is either non-active or very low, starting from searching for any info
about Storm beyond hello world to discussions\articles, etc. One big
problem for me like for a user is the fact that it's really hard to find
some people and maybe sites for discussions. When I face a few bugs with a
storm and saw that some users faced it as well, I investigate it a bit on
my own and then wanted to describe it somewhere like StackOverflow, etc to
better understand the issue and maybe even help to fix it since its hard to
fix something along in such a big project but almost nobody responded. I
wanted to open a Jira bug and maybe discuss it there but it's closed for
registration for random users. Even tried here in "lists.apache.org" but
the same result. So maybe community really swiftly decreases over time
which is sad.

Re: [DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

Posted by Rui Abreu <ru...@gmail.com>.
Storm is a very successful project, even before the major re-write that
happened on version 2.x.
The community has been slowing down over the last couple of years, but
perhaps that is a reflection of the maturity level of the project, where
there are no major bugs or feature requests. So I like to think Storm is
very much not dead, but that's for the community to decide.
Taylor, thanks for stepping up. I agree that lowering the bar can be the
way to go.

Re: [DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

Posted by "P. Taylor Goetz" <pt...@gmail.com>.
Nice! Seems like a good addition.

Thanks to everyone who came forward and offered to help. It looks like there’s enough support and consensus to keep Storm out of the attic.

The first order of business is to re-establish a PMC Chair to act as a liaison to the Apache Board of Directors. For those on the dev@ and user@ mailing lists (i.e. non-PMC members) you won’t see this process play out since it will take place on a private PMC-level mailing list, but the final result will be published on the public mailing lists.

For PMC Members: Please keep an eye on the private@ mailing list. There will be a VOTE thread on electing a new PMC Chair, followed by a resolution submitted to the board that will establish the new PMC chair. The board meets once a month, so this can take some time.

The second order of business will be to bring in additional committers/PMC members who have offered to help keep the lights on. Again, that process plays out on the private@ mailing list, but results will be posted on the public mailing lists.

As we all know, traffic is low on mailing lists, etc. since Storm is mostly in maintenance mode, so following those mailing lists shouldn’t be a huge burden. I’d ask everyone, particularly PMC members, to keep an eye on mailing lists and do your best to reply to VOTE/DISCUSS threads in a timely manner.

I set up a (MacOS) smart mailbox to track email. I’ve attached a screenshot of the config in case it may be helpful to others.

Thanks again everyone. Cheers!

-Taylor

Cheers!

-Taylor

Re: [DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

Posted by Julien Nioche <li...@gmail.com>.
Hi,

I'd be happy to get involved. I haven't delved deep into Storm's code but
have been using it for years and my project StormCrawler relies heavily on
it. I have been a committer on several Apache projects but not been active
in any of them for a while.
I know that there are loads of StormCrawler users and of course that also
makes them Storm users. Even though a number of people might have moved to
other platforms, I don't believe Storm is dead and maintenance mode is
probably an accurate description. So if you are willing to lower the bar,
please count me in and am definitely +1 for Taylor as a PMC chair.

Cheers

Julien

An anecdote that might be applicable:

Look at version controls over the last few decades:

CVS —> Apache Subersion —> Git

Each transition was a major improvement.

That may lead you believe that Subversion is dead and long gone. And you would be wrong.

Subversion is still alive because it stil has a user base, Talso has one of, if not the most, open-door policies to entry: Want committer access? Just ask and you’re in. If you eff up, someone will catch it and revert it.

We’ve had a few express interest in continuing the project. Why not elevate them to Committer/PMC?

Re: [DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

Posted by "P. Taylor Goetz" <pt...@gmail.com>.
IMO, there are tow scenarios:

1. Storm is in dead. No one uses it anymore, and no one needs security patches, etc.
2. Storm is in maintenance mode. While new features may not be added, there are enough contributors left tp at least address any security concerns.

Wether we pursue the attic o projectr continuation is really up to the community. Anyone who want to step up and help continue the project should be considered a PMC candidate.

As I’ve said in other threads, I’m willing to act as PMC chair whatever the PMC decides.

But for now we have ne official liaison to ther ASF board. PMC members need to elect a chair, whether we choose to continue or head to the attic.

I would lean toward lowering the bar for PMC membership to anyone interested in ongoing maintenance.

I’m still willing to serve as the board liaison (PMC Chair) in either case of retirement or continuation. I’d also support anyone else willing to take the position. The position needs to be filled either way.

This is a decision that affects both developers and users. Thank you Aaron for bringing it to the attention of the broader community.

Re: [DISCUSSION] Apache Storm and moving to the Attic

Posted by Stephen Powis via user <us...@storm.apache.org>.
Ah Yea, also not opposed to the move to the attic if it's determined to be
most appropriate, but I had a similar experience as Richard where I
submitted some PRs, asked for comments/thoughts/review, and even offered to
take over ownership of one of the sub modules and got no responses.
Perhaps I just submitted under the wrong forum to get an answer, but
definitely a bummer, and would love to see the project/community get
revived.

Thank you to those who responded. Given that the low number of responses I
am going to start a vote on moving to the attic tomorrow.

One other note: A vote to move to the attic would not mean the end of
Storm, the project can be forked by anyone who wants to continue the work
(just as it can be forked today), it would just be outside of the ASF.

Hi all,

I also experienced, that dev@ activity is quite low. I did provide some
PRs and asked questions a few months ago and didn't get any feedback,
although the PRs got merged in the end. I think, that we need some sort
of community rebuilding / revival, if we want to maintain Storm in a
sustainable way (like it is done for TomEE or OpenNLP).

Nevertheless, as I am also a committer on StormCrawler, which relies on
Storm (obviously) _and_ is used in our research work, I am also happy
to jump in as a volunteer, if some ppl are needed.

I am volunteering to take on the role of PMC chairFor Storm. Not quite sure about the process.

Thanks you for your time,
Aaron
