The issue is the storeContent() method needs to be called to write the dataOut data to "content" so it's not null when reading. That method is called in many places such as when copy is called, compressing, onSend, etc. This was designed this way on purpose as the messages have multiple modes (read/write) and allows converting between marshalled/unmashalled when going over the write or in use easily without wasting space and cpu storing the data twice or converting back and forth

So you probably need to do:
 # jms message, of type ActiveMQBytesMessage is received;
 # set a property on that message - use ActiveMQBytesMessage#setObjectProperty method;
 # *call storeContent()*
 # try to read the content - use ActiveMQBytesMessage#read* method.
 # analyze the result...
