The INSTALL documentation doesn't describe how to build from SVN. I guessed I was supposed to use build_all.sh, but when I did that it failed
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../../.. -I../../../include -I/include -I../../../src/util -g -O2 -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -ansi -Wall -Wno-implicit-function-declaration -MT util_hash_test.lo -MD -MP -MF .deps/util_hash_test.Tpo -c util_hash_test.c -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/util_hash_test.o
In file included from util_hash_test.c:19:
util_hash_test.h:20:20: error: CuTest.h: No such file or directory
If I'm supposed to download cutest myself and put it somewhere, then the documentation should say so, but I would say it would be simpler to have cutest in the SVN since it's so small.

You can set --enable-tests=no in build.sh to eliminate the need for CUTest.
We drop CuTest when packaging source, this is why it is not mentioned in docs.
We cannot include CuTest in our source tree, due to license concerns, it is not Apache compatible.
I would personally like to drop CuTest and look for an alternative, may be our own test framework.

Since developers need to use tests frequently , I think it is good to have --enable-tests=yes. Otherwise , It puts extra burden on dev's head (They happen to change --enable-test=no before committing code into SVN). As with releases concerns it's OK to package with --enable-tests=no

If you can't include CuTest in the source tree, then I would suggest that it is disabled by default, and that you have to use --enable-tests=yes to enable it. I agree the right solution eventually is to find an alternative that is license compatible.
