Toward a new Qpid website
http://people.apache.org/~jross/transom/output/
Hi, folks. This is the first public draft of the new site I've been
working on. I'd appreciate your attention and comments. I'll be
incorporating your feedback and producing new drafts on a weekly basis
until it's time for release, perhaps when 0.22 is ready.
The site should look like the images below:
http://people.apache.org/~jross/transom/transom-1.png
http://people.apache.org/~jross/transom/transom-2.png
If it doesn't, please send me a screenshot of what you get and some
details about your platform.
I have some more to say about the general information design, but I'll
save that for a subsequent mail.
Thanks!
Justin

Okay, I'll check out the different font option and give you something
to evaluate. I prefer news cycle in your two examples, but this gets
subjective fast! Maybe I can find a third option that we'll both
like.
As to page width, I can widen it a little, but I do have two design
goals I'd like to consider preserving: First, the current design fits
in one half of a 1920x1080 display, which is to say it is less than
960 pixels wide, including the scrollbar. I use the linux/windows
feature of attaching windows to the right or left side a lot, so this
is pleasant for me. Second, the mobile use case: I'd like to keep the
site usable from a phone or tablet, and adding width doesn't help
there.
I'm personally not a big fan of the links-on-the side approach, but of
course I can see why it's convenient. All I'll say is that it's nice
(for me) to get more stuff out of view and focus on a given page's
content.
Thanks!
Justin

Here are the two screen captures I did on my system: the first [1] is
the default, rendered in Firefox on Fedora 18, while the second [2] is
using Arial 12pt on the same. I find the Arial 12pt more appealing to
read.
Also, since most systems these days have screens with >= 1280px wide
displays, can we adjust the width of the webpage accordingly? There's a
lot of empty gutter space on either side that feels wasted. Even if we
constrain the main content to a region, say, 1000px wide (to
accomodating people on older displays) we could still have some common
links or a table on the right that's 280px.

I think in general the structure is a big improvement. The home page is
more focused and direct. I *really* like the individual 'component'
pages as well as the components index page. The getting involved page is
a lot more engaging and welcoming than the current one.
However - brace yourself!- there are some things I am less keen on...
I really don't like the graphic across the top, or the font in which
AMQP Messenger is written. To me it looks like an advert for a
retirement home and is out of tune with the rest of the page.
Also, I'm not mad on the use of 'we' and 'us' in the 'welcome'
paragraphs. It seems a little insular to me. I'd prefer to try and more
explicitly mention the the community makes the tools etc.
I'm not sure about the new Qpid logo (i.e. white 'Q' shape in blue); I
do think it should be aligned a little better at least, as it looks like
it couldn't quite fit in at present. I find the top banner a little
noisier than ideal. The change in size, font and case seems excessive in
transitioning from 'Apache Qpid' to 'AMQP Messaging'.
At the risk of stirring up the mud again, I feel we could be a little
clearer on proton. E.g. remove the 'Qpid is home to Qpid Proton' from
the project and have a Qpid Proton section above APIs, saying that it is
a toolkit allowing any application to speak AMQP.
There are more minor wording quibbles (e.g. I don't like 'advanced
reliability'), but probably worth debating through the bigger issues first.
We do desperately need a better web site, and I think this gets the ball
rolling on that very nicely. Thanks!

Justin,
Thanks a lot for working on this. I really appreciate that.
I like how the content is organized. The structure is a big
improvement over what we have.
The biggest improvement is the individual component pages! I really
like the structure there.
However I'm not too keen about the graphics, the logo and the colors.
This is an area I think we could use some help from a professional
website designer.
We could work on the structure and get the web designer to work on the
eye candy.
What do you think?

Hi Justin,
I would like to know if the actual release for 0.20 C++ broker and client has happened? There was a lot activity of late, so I haven't kept up with
all the details.
Thanks

Thank you everyone for the feedback so far. It has been very useful.
Here's a new draft for you to evaluate:
http://people.apache.org/~jross/transom/2013-02-11/
Any comments concerning the presentation and content are welcome.
They help me explore the space so I can offer better drafts.
This week has brought the following changes:
- More content in the release pages and mailing-lists page
- Promoted the "more ways to get Qpid" link to the front page
- Rearranged the front page to emphasize the left-side "what is Qpid" portion
- Tighter language on the front page
- A new logo alternative
- Added an "even more resources" area
- Factored getting started docs into release and component pages and
the source-code page
Thanks!

This is great work! I like the way it is organized & linked. I'm sure
we'll have some discussion about logos, colours and the like but don't
let that distract you too much from the content.
Noticed one omission: "more about apis" is missing the qpid messaging
API from the list.
