[Bug 121205] New: Download open office does not include english dictionary

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121205

          Priority: P3
            Bug ID: 121205
          Assignee: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
Summary: Download open office does not include english
                    dictionary
          Severity: major
        Issue Type: DEFECT
    Classification: Application
                OS: Windows XP
          Reporter: j.coolman@btinternet.com
          Hardware: PC
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: AOO 3.4.1
         Component: www
           Product: installation

On opening a word processor document this morning [12th October 2012] all words
were underlined as needing spell checking. Never happened before. After going
through the 'trouble shooting' recommendations, I found that the only
dictionary that was showing in the extensions was French!
I uninstalled Open Office and downloaded the up-to-date version from the
website. The new download does not appear to include the English dictionary. I
tried to install 'dict-en.oxt' and recieved the message: C:\documents and
settings\administrator\application
data\openoffice\3\user\uno_packages\cache\uno_packages\sv7m04y.tmp\dict-en.oxt
does not exist.

Has the download been corrupted at your end, or is there a problem with my
computer?

The path on Comment 1 are an answer to the Description made by the original
reporter, so don't take the advice literally and please read the Forum link in
Comment 1 in order to find the path in your system
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12426

It should be something like

C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user

replace <user name> with your Windows login name.

There is a bug with the dictionaries (they are extensions, and are installed in
your user profile). See
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues

"Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 manage the user profile differently than
previous versions. The old user profile is automatically converted so that
users can keep their extensions and settings. In a minority of cases,
especially with highly customized profiles (many extensions or customizations)
the conversion doesn't succeed. Common symptoms are: frequent application
crashes, problems with dictionaries or thesaurus, OpenOffice starting and
crashing after a few seconds. To solve this, just reset/rename your user
profile as explained in the official OpenOffice forum.
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12426"

If you don't want to remove the whole OpenOffice user profile, located at
C:\documents and settings\administrator\application data\openoffice\3\user

you may try to shutdown OO, including the system tray quick starter, and simply
remove the folders

C:\documents and settings\administrator\application
data\openoffice\3\user\uno_packages
C:\documents and settings\administrator\application
data\openoffice\3\user\extensions

Note that should have only one English-US dictionary installed.
