[DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC7

This is the discussion thread.

This RC contains lots of small changes to try to handle inability to
connect to the server to get the various config and locale files. It
hard-codes the en_US strings so it doesn't have to go to the server to get
them so that there will at least be english strings if the server isn't
there.

It also fixes a timing bug if you change locales rapidly.

In theory, I did not touch any cache-related code.

Alex,

This is just you trying to beat the record Om and I set with the first
release of the installer, right?

7 down, 3 to go...

Best thing to do is probably to uninstall, then re-install from here:

yes that's the build i used. new bits in the same place? the file marked
11-Mar-2014 05:10?

Yeah, there was definitely a bug in the dmg/exe I put on my people.a.o
folder, but it should have been fixed in the RC7 (which should also have
the version in the log). Plus, it just worked for me on Win 7, but it is
a VMWare VM.

Sometimes the 'temp' folder created during the installation does not get
deleted. See if that is the case here?

If you pulled from my people dir before 11-Mar-2014 05:10 (in Europe) then
you got a buggy version.

You can delete the "in" dir. Om is referring to a different folder. The
installer creates a temp folder for downloading the binary package, but
once the install is turned over to the ant script, it uses the "in" folder
(because anyone actually using Ant needs to choose some folder anyway).
It never occurred to me to delete it since we keep it around in the SDK
builds.
I suppose in 4.13 we can change the script to delete it.

sure is the same one that blew up 9I trashed the first one before i realized it
might be needed later). maybe it was fixed?

yes there's an "in" dir that takes up 52% (700mb) of the SDK install dir. its
not in the 4.11 install dir. most of the "in" dir is used by an "airsdk" dir 76%
(530mb).

is that the temp dir that big O was referring to?

can i delete it?

Yes, this was on a run with FlexJS. I just tried 4.13.0 nightly and it
does not get cached. So, I guess adjusting the FlexJS install should fix
it.

There is already a no cache bit in the config file that the Installer
appears to use correctly, at least in my testing. If you ran a FlexJS
install, it will cache that zip. I haven't had time to adjust the FlexJS
install to not cache that download. Could that be what is happening?

Re: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC7

Posted by OmPrakash Muppirala <bi...@gmail.com>.
I see another serious problem (sorry)
After caching is enabled, it seems like the nightly builds are being cached
as well. For example, under the
.../LocalStore/job/flex-falcon/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/out directory,
there is a apache-flex-falconjx-0.0.1-bin.zip. If this gets built for
every checkin, then we should not be caching this file.

The config file should probably have a "dont cache" property that can be
set.

I'll do a check later. On Mac the compare goes quickly. I don't know if
file times get recorded in the zip and cause a checksum difference or not.

One issue that has been bothering me, though. I tried an install without
cache and then with cache on. Then, I zipped both the resulting SDK
directories and did a checksum on them. They turned out to be different.
Is this expected?

A full directory compare was taking way way too long for me to figure out
exactly what changed.

Hmm. So you couldn't reproduce the "unfinished" install? I guess we'll

don't need to see the log if it was successful.

well the file marked 11-Mar-2014 05:10 installed A-ok. don't suppose you want to

btw the SDK install size seems to have blossomed from 4.11 to 4.12. same options

When I looked back when we were in the incubator, no code from
playerglobal was being linked in. That was important to being able to
call it a build tool instead of a required dependency.

Maybe Adobe just pushes the playerglobal.swc when they slipstream a player
update. At least, that's my guess of what happened in this case.

In this case I sorted the swfdumps and did a diff and it only tells me that the debug password and build date had changed.

Only Adobe would know (and they don't even announce when it changes as far as I know). I'd assume it would be security patch related.

I usually pick up that it's changed as the MD5 hashes no longer match.

This reminds me of when I was poking around the Event Dispatcher and ran into those player functions that were declared, but were empty. Understanding they are executing in a native language inside the flash player. However it does make sense that they could exist just for the sake of the compiler. The private ones I found were used internally to the player.

It could be that "native" isn't required anymore and everyone needs to
externally link. Don't know for sure. My understanding is that the
public APIs need to be there because the compiler parses the library.swf
to build up the class definitions the compiler will use when compiling
your app. You can see from [1] that most methods are stubs. I have no
idea why some methods have bodies or why there are private methods. It
might also be used internally for test generation.

I don't think there is a way to override a built-in player class. The
ApplicationDomain rules would cause me to expect that all classes in
playerglobal.swc are already in the ApplicationDomain before your SWF
loads and first-in wins.

That may be the case and sorry again for getting this off topic but it is rather curious.

Can you explain why there is ActionScript class and methods not marked as native in playerglobal.as? Here's one exmaple. [1]

If it wasn't required it could be removed and the swc would be smaller.

About the only way I can think of showing it one way or another is to take an existing playerGlobal.swc, replace one of these non-native classes method with something that just does a trace and see what happens when it called. I don't have the tools to be able to do that.

My understanding is that there is a bunch of .as files in Adobe's SCM that
represent every class in the API. These classes have every method and
property, but the method bodies are empty. These classes are annotated
with ASDoc and used to generate the ASLR and playerglobal.swc.

But at runtime the actual code that runs is written in C. And that's why
every Flex SWF I know of can be compiled with playerglobal.swc in the
external library path. No code from playerglobal.swc gets linked in to
the SWF yet those SWFs run fine.

Hi,

They are actually implemented in AS in the information I've found. Not eveything is marked native. You can add EventDispatcher to that short list. [1]

I would have to actually decompile the player global swf to know for sure but I'm not going to do that for several reasons. Just do a google search for "decompiled playergloble.swc".

Justin

1. dispatchEvent and toString are AS methods but the rest are marked native. It also seems to include a rather interesting method "private native function get listeners():Array;"

I don't doubt that, but aren't they stubs and not actual implementations?
I think you have to mark playerglobal.swc as an external-library-path
otherwise if any of that get linked in the SWF will not run. Also, IIRC,
the APIs are marked as native which I think also prevents the linker from
linking in that code.

I generated a link-report for the Installer which uses URLLoader, and
URLLoader is not linked into the SWF.

I thought byte code from playerglobal did not actually get linked into any

So it's in the config file?

I suggest we change it now so it does have security concerns and people may not realise that they are not getting the latest player global.

PlayerGlobal.swc was the only difference? That's good to know.

Whether it is cached or not is in the hands of the installer.xml in the

Comparing the swf dumps I get a few changes including:
< <ProductInfo product='Apache Flex' edition='' version='4.1' build='16076' compileDate='17/02/14 1:11 PM'/>
---
> <ProductInfo product='Apache Flex' edition='' version='4.1' build='16076' compileDate='4/03/14 9:15 AM'/>

As the playerglobals.swc are small and the latest ones do tend to change every months or so perhaps we shouldn't cache them?

Thanks,
Justin

It's an icon on Windows desktop.
Weird. The tooltip also appears when any other app is in the front, but the cursor is just above that desktop icon.
Windows' bug?
Anyway, it's not the installer ;-)

Regarding the "pull the plug", I didn't mean it as a realistic scenario, and obviously it's not.
It was just an easy way for me to detect how connection errors are handled in various places in the code, without looking in the source code.
The better way (as someone suggested) would be to install a reverse proxy that can simulate network latency, but I don't have enough time for putting that in place, sorry.

My concern about this is that folks in some places with not so good, or intermittent network connections, won't be able to use the installer to install FLEX SDK, and that would eventually give a bad image of the product.
But I don't have any evidence of this.
So let's wait until folks complain (if ever they do).

Anyway, I won't vote -1 on the installer for this.

I can't reproduce getting stuck by unplugging during the download of the SDK. I've gotten it to partially download and then get stuck in the MD5 calculation on Windows 7 for VMWare.

Right now, my sense is that, when the network is good, the installer is working fine. I think we've made things sufficient when there's no network at all at startup. But I'm beginning to question the value of spending more time on trying to make things better when you pull the plug during the install. Installer 2.7 and older have suffered from incomplete AIR SDK downloads that get stuck in the cache and I don't think it has been a detriment to the project. I don't think these pull-the-plug scenarios are going to be frequent enough, and they are getting harder to reproduce.

Thoughts?

Agree 100% You should not be spending any more time on this. We cant fix
every corner
case.

We have a robust logging mechanism in place. We can fix things as bugs
show up.

RE: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC7

Posted by Maurice Amsellem <ma...@systar.com>.
Test results of RC7.
Summary:
Connection errors are handled correctly at early steps (resource bundles, config files), but not during downloads ( at least not in all places).

Details below:

Windows 7, locale=FR

General:
Minor: "Install Log" button tool tip says "Display downloaded apps", and it's not localized.
But I couldn't find tooltip statement in the source code.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cp834wv4bei9fq2/tooltip.png

Test #1: start installer, internet unplugged:
After a few seconds, the console appears with a few messages in English + 'Installation aborted"'.
=> OK

Test #2: install FlexJS,, cache loaded, unplug internet in the middle:
Installation completes sucessfully
Note: notices are in English, but that's OK (FlexJS install script not localized)
=> OK

Test #3: install FlexJS, file missing from cache (guava), unplug in the middle:
=> Red square + busy square but no message or console.
=> OK but confusing (busy cursor)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yrc2occkqbx6gv2/test3_red_square.png

Test#4: installer FlexJS after abort, cache uncomplete
=> install sucessful
=> OK

Test#5: install FlexSDK 4.12 / AIR 4.0, unplug in the middle of sdk download
=> after a few minutes, busy cursor is still running
=> KO. ( error not handled).

I think Maurice's proposition as a much cleaner message for the user on the "Installation progress step" is a great solution for this!

The rest of my proposition such as "restart" and "back" button could wait for the future releases. I'm going to rise jira ticket for that and try to do it if Alex wouldn't mind. - But this is after release current version. :)

About what to do when the installation aborts ( copied from RC6 thread)

Piotr proposes to retry when the connection is recovered (or at least have a retry button).
I understand and agree (dixit Alex) that's way more work that we want to put in the installer.

IMO, the problem is that it's not clear to users, when the installation has aborted, that you have to *restart* the installer.

So maybe the "Installation aborted" message in the log should be changed to something more explicit, such as:

"Installation aborted. Restart the installer to try again."

That's a simple change.

WDYT?

This is the discussion thread.

This RC contains lots of small changes to try to handle inability to connect to the server to get the various config and locale files. It hard-codes the en_US strings so it doesn't have to go to the server to get them so that there will at least be english strings if the server isn't there.

It also fixes a timing bug if you change locales rapidly.

In theory, I did not touch any cache-related code.

Yep consider it changed to +0 until I work out what the compile issue above is.

OK, trying to close this down. Nobody objected to the plan to defer
announcing Installer 3.0 and switching the config.xml until 4.12.1 comes
out, so that's the plan I'm working towards.

The vote has been open a while. I'm ready to add my vote and send results
but first:

1) I still can't repro: "Error: Inconsistant linkage in
/Users/justinmclean/Documents/ApacheFlexDevelopGit/frameworks/libs/air/airg
lobal.swc(flash.utils:ByteArray, flash.utils:CompressionAlgorithm,
flash.utils:IDataInput2, flash.utils:IDataOutput2),
'flash.utils:ByteArray' is marked as extern, but 'flash.utils:IDataInput2'
is not"
Justin: can you provide more explicit steps to reproduce?
I tried "Change FLEX_HOME to point to a 4.12 SDK, (that's been set up with
AIR
4.0) and try run ant in ant_for_air directory." but that worked correctly
for me.
What is AIR_HOME pointing to? In the
vote thread you mentioned someone about the "Latest SDK" and "Latest
develop branch" so I'm not sure how those factor in.

2) Since we have agreed to defer the announcement and config switch,
Justin, do you wish to change your vote before the final tally?

Thanks,
-Alex

Use the RC7 to install 4.12. Then compile as many of your existing
projects as you have time for, and maybe try creating a new project.
You'll get a compile error about missing a locale.

That's my expectation. Justin got ant_on_air to fail for a non-en_US
install because that particular project only has an en_US locale but
specifies locale/{locale} in the source-path but doesn't hardcode the
locale to en_US. I think folks who use RC7 in a non-en_US locale and for
some reason don't have other locales for their locale will see this kind
of error because in the past it would find en_US instead. But I think
most folks have specified a set of locales in the locale chain that match
their locales.

Usually, we set en_US as a fallback locale on all our projects compiler options, along with the other supported locales (en_GB, fr_FR, es_SP, etc...).
The localChain is then dynamically set from some external settings (typically, Browser or system locale).
If the locale is not found, we simply fall back to en_US.
So if I understand you, my projects won't be affected.

Please try it yourself. I have to defer to the non-en_US folks on these matters. One question: do all of your projects set the locale chain explicitly? If so, then I think this issue does not affect you. I think it will only affect you if you have projects that do not have locales for your country that you built relying on the default SDK locale being set to en_US. Erik, for example, is doing work for a US-based company and may get caught building some library if it only has en_US resources and does not explicitly set en_US in the build script or project properties.

I would have preferred a request to delay announcing/switching to Installer 3.0 vs voting -1. We delayed the announcement of 4.12 to try to wait for the Installer. I think we can consider 3.0 done and wait to announce and force the auto-upgrade until 4.12.1 is finished. Then I can go work on other things in the interim. How does that plan sound to everyone?

IIUC, installer 3.0 is good enough, but the installer.xml file in the 4.12 release SDK is not good.

So IMO, we shouldn't make a release now, because in this case, installer 3.0 will replace 2.7 as the default installer page (installer.html).

So people who install Flex using the official combination of installer + SDK 4.12 will get an error, right?

I think we should wait until the next point release (SDK 4.12.1) to make an official release of the installer.

IMO there is - the ant script is really part of the installer it just happens to live in the SDK.

If we release the installer before we release a new SDK there is risk that we will have a serious locale issue.

But if other PMC members are willing to take that risk and help out the (possible many) users that run into the issue then go for it and release it.

I've voted -1 because of this issue but if there's 3 +1 votes that makes it's an official release. Hopefully the negative feedback from users will be minimal and worse case someone who voted +1 on this can make another release quickly.

Don't think I need to say any more on this matter as I've made my views clear.

Thanks,
Justin

So, this issue can apparently be fixed by a new SDK release, not a new
Installer RC. If I understand that correctly, there is no reason to veto
the Installer release because of an SDK issue that happened to come to
light when testing the Installer.

It's a problem with the installer ant file in the 4.12 released SDK I believe. Lok like ALex may of just corrected the issue.

80+% of people who install the SDK are outside of the US and who may use an locale other than en_US. I guess some would use en_US but a lot wouldn't - either way that's a significant amount of users.

What locales did your project have that you tested the SDK made with the installer? When an SDK error occurred did it show up in the locale you expect as per the SDK description shown?

So everyone who voted +1 is willing to support out the 80+% of user who are effect by the locale issue?

Hi,

Sorry if it's inconvenient but as per Apache guidelines votes are on source releases not binaries and as PMC members we need to abide by that.

That's not a really helpful - and very unnecessary - reminder, as it
doesn't change anything, does it? There are no (known) issues with building
the source. So all we're talking about are issues with the functionality of
the binary.

I'm with Om. Call 3.0.

Any issues (incorrectly) building from source will probably not happen that
often in the wild, as this is realistically speaking a utility for which
even devs will download the binaries.

I personally would like you to go back to concentrating on FlexJS, so, yes,

We can always do a 3.1 if we get a lot of people complain.

Couldn't repro. What is AIR_HOME pointing to? BTW, I was able to
reproduce the "invalid application descriptor" issue by pointing AIR_HOME
to AIR 3.9. But I can't repro this "Inconsistent Linkage" issue. In the

Change FLEX_HOME to point to a 4.12 SDK, (that's been set up with AIR 4.0) and try run ant in ant_for_air directory.

Yep in 4.12 the RSL numbers is correct so I don't see this as a show stopper, but it would still be nice to fix. Users will run into this issue and we'll have to spend time and effort in telling they how to fix it.

The README is in the source release so this would mean the signatures would no longer be valid.

Also the locale issue is a -1 for me even if the issue is elsewhere, we can't release the installer if there an issue like this. If you look at the installs of 4.12 only about 16% of installs are from the USA.

At this point, I could cast a +1 and post the installer, but I want to
investigate #1 below in hopes of getting Justin to change his vote, and
make sure nobody has objections to #2 and #3:

1) Justin voted -1 and listed several issues. I'm still looking for
enough information to try to reproduce "Error: Inconsistant linkage in
/Users/justinmclean/Documents/ApacheFlexDevelopGit/frameworks/libs/air/airg
lobal.swc(flash.utils:ByteArray, flash.utils:CompressionAlgorithm,
flash.utils:IDataInput2, flash.utils:IDataOutput2) -
'flash.utils:ByteArray' is marked as extern, but 'flash.utils:IDataInput2'
is not"
Justin: can you provide the steps to reproduce?

2) The Installer apparently has not and does not provide the correct build
numbers for the RSLs for 4.11 and older releases (except for
OSMF.swc/swf). IOW, this is a bug in Installer 2.7 that is not fixed for
older releases. The installer.xml for 4.12 looks like it is providing the
correct build numbers.

3) The README incorrectly states that the ant_on_air build will pick up
FLEX_HOME_WIN and FLEX_HOME_MAC environment variables and no longer states
that the installer build will. Since the README is not in the source kit,
I was going to change the README, make a new tag, then post RC7 with the
modified README. The alternatives are to create an RC8 with just this
modified README, or create an RC8 and teach the ant_on_air build to pick
up the FLEX_HOME_WIN and FLEX_HOME_MAC environment variables.

Thoughts?

Each RC had enough code changes to make me want folks to at least run the
dmg/exe.

If you can run the installer on your next potty break, that would be much
appreciated.

Why don't you cary over the votes from the previous RCs (like Justin does
with the SDK releases) and see what the tally is then?

72 hours is passed and we have:

1 +1 binding vote (Erik)
1 +0 binding vote (Maurice)
1 +1 non-binding vote Piotr

I think I wore everyone out with the prior 6 RCs. I was getting ready to
cast my +1 vote when I discovered that the source kit unintentionally
includes the local.properties file I was using that has the path to the
certificate. FWIW, we've shipped with the build.properties containing a
path that is potentially a path on some other committer's machine.

So, what should we do? Roll yet another RC (this one would just be a
package change so votes would carry over). Or should I and one other PMC
member vote +1 and we get this thing out the door?

Thoughts?
