session attributes

I have set some session attributes in an action and am wondering how to access them in the sitemap. I have tried
<map:parameter name="userId" value="{session-attr:userId}"/> within the <map:transform> tags but am not getting them.
I would like to be able to have these attributes available in any pipeline, is that possible?
