Where are things?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

It seems the status on the jakarta has not been updated
recently and I am wondering where things are. Is there an ETA for a
release? How about a Milestone? I've been hoping to be able to use
Jakarta in a consulting project that has a deadline of about 3 months
from now. Would it be realistic to expect a moderately
stable/complete version up and running by then? Is development at a
point where me trying to build something 'real' with Jakarta (and
rooting out bugs that way) would be a help to the main development
team, or are there too many missing pieces to even bother?
Answers to any of these questions would be helpful.
Thank you.

Re: Changes FAQ

I agree it would be good to have a Changes document. That would make a lot
more sense once we start having releases (happening soon). I don't think the
Changes document should list all specification changes. There is a place for
that and that is in the specification. It should be enough for us to say in
the Changes document for example that a new release implements Servlet 2.2.
We should checkin a Changes file into the repository after the first milestone
build. After that people can start editing it everytime someone adds a new
feature or fixes a bug.

Changes FAQ
Posted by Luc Saint-Elie <ls...@imaginet.fr>.
Hello
Tomcat grows pretty quickly (and to answer a previous question is pretty
usable in its current form, we here use it in an intranet without problem)
but 2.2 API has some changes from 2.1
For example expresso from www.javacorporate.com compiles with 2.1 but not
with 2.2 because a getServletName( problem
(com\javacorporate\common\servlet\StdServlet.java:111: The method
java.lang.String getServletName() declared in class
com.javacorporate.common.servlet.StdServlet cannot override the method of
the same signature declared in class javax.servlet.GenericServlet. The
access modifier is made more restrictive.)
If there are several other point that could break things it would be great
to maintain a porting FAQ (I'm volunteer to maintain it)

Just as a status update -- the NT box is installed and in the lab, but not
talking to the network. Apparently Compaq decided to put a network card into
the machine that's not supported out of the box by NT Server. Phppt! Maybe
tommorrow. If things go well, NT builds will be coming on line sometime this
weekend.

Since we've got some test failures in the product tests for Tomcat, we
probably should hold till those are fixed before the M1. Right now the
product tests are passing with flying colors on the J2EE FCS branch, so
there's something related to the merge from that branch to the trunk that
needs to be looked at.
Once we have a clean bill of health on the product tests, then we should pop
the M1.

I've got an NT box that I'll be setting up tommorrow with the required
peices to do the nightly builds and tests on NT (in a similar manner to
what's happening on Solaris). Once we have a few nightly builds / results
under our belts on both Solaris and NT I'd like to pop an M1. I'm aiming for
Sunday or Monday on this.
Any objections?

There's a few things that need to be done before we can have a release.
Tentatively in my mind (and a few others at Sun I've discussed this with) we
were planning to have a major release in January. Tomcat Y2K :-)
Some TODO items off the top of my head are:
1. Get automated builds for Tomcat standalone and Apache atleast on 3
platforms we care about (Solaris, Linux, mainly and NT if we get around to
automate building that, if not someone can manually build and put
milestone/nightly builds there)
2. There's quite a few bugs that some of us know exist in Tomcat. Fix most of
them.
3. Get Watchdog up and running well (a review+feedback on those tests would
also be good) so that we can actually start using it on a daily basis.
4. Some performance improvements on Tomcat.
5. Some rearchitecting to better integrate with Apache etc... (Costin can tell
you about some ideas he has.)
6. I'm sure Craig has a few items he'd be interested in.
In general, get the base system (servlet/jsp support and apache connectors)
rocking :-)
Of course not all/any of these need to be done for milestone builds. They'll
happen soon as Duncan sez.

There's a release plan that was discussed on tomcat-dev. It hasn't yet
crystallized out which is why it's not yet posted.
> How about a Milestone?
I was going to propose putting a M1 out as soon as the nightly builds on
Solaris and NT are up and running smoothly. We're in the process of making
that happen right now.

It's definitly usable. Things are changing, but the core functionality is
there and ready to be used. As to whether it's in good enough shape for you
to use in your project, that's something that only you can answer by pulling
it down and seeing if it works for you in your situtation.
