[Mentors] 9.0 beta rc3 vote thread

Hi, especially our mentors,

The rc3 vote thread is moving along well and it would be great that when we
move to the IPMC vote thread we have at least 2 votes from our mentors.

That would mean you’d do your vote by Wednesday CET EOB. Just dropping a
line to see whether that would be doable — i.e., checking up front to see
whether two or more mentors would be able to evaluate the release by then.

Thanks!

Gj

OK, given it time and will put the IPMC vote result tally together during
today.

Thanks all, looks like we have Apache NetBeans (incubating) 9.0 Beta.

OK, we have three +1 IPMC votes and it is over 72 hours since starting the
IPMC thread and the discussion in the thread has died down.

Can we wrap it up and release rc3 as Apache NetBeans (incubating) 9.0 Beta?

Thanks,

I see. Then it is something I should solve.
https://github.com/apache/incubator-netbeans/pull/257 - I'll work on the
option #1.

The answer depends on whether we talk about the NetBeans Platform or the
whole IDE. From the point of view of NetBeans Platform this library is
optional.

Re: [Mentors] 9.0 beta rc3 vote thread

Posted by Geertjan Wielenga <ge...@googlemail.com>.
Yes, that's the only question at this point -- several approaches are available:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-361

The point is whether we need to solve this right now for the Beta to
be released -- or whether this is something that we need to solve in
order to graduate from the incubator, which is not at all what the
Beta release is about. We know there are various items to still work
on for IP clearance to complete, though we have made a lot of progress
already specifically in the context of rc3:

Hi!

been busy as well lately. The IPMC mail is flagged in my calendar since days :/

As far as I understood the only open Q is about the modded eclipse equinox jar, isn't?
For my understanding: is this a mandatory library or something which is optional?

OK, the IPMC vote has been up since Friday, i.e., on the incubator@general
mailing list.

There’s a question there re a legal issue that we need to answer.

Aside from that, what can we do to get the missing binding +1 (since we
have two of those from our mentors and need at least three in total)?

Anyone someone can ping re this — also note we have 5 mentors of which 2
are actually active (and wonderfully helpful thank you Bertrand and Ate).
Should something be done about this?

Many thanks and a good week to everyone,

It looks to me like we should go ahead with the IPMC vote, though ideally I
think we’d add/correct the page referenced above with info to avoid these
tagging problems before we do that.

Any insights/ideas re this?

Here's our release management page with instructions I followed in
putting the rc3 together:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Apache+NetBeans+Release+README

What could be added/changed/corrected in the above to avoid the
specific issues that have arisen with the tag -- and anything else to

Re: [Mentors] 9.0 beta rc3 vote thread

Hi guys,

re: LICENSE being slightly different in the source tarball
Here at SimuQuest, we've had similar confusions between files which are
templates in version control but fleshed out in the release.
Our solution has been to
   * keep the templates in a separate folder
   * use a templating language like the one in maven or Velocity
   * try to keep comments in each file saying what it is and where it came
from
   * not include the template folder in the binary release

For us, this has been motivated less by tarball comparisons and more by
wanting developers to modify and commit the "right" copy of the file.

Hope the info helps.

Kind Regards,
Johnny

I think LICENSE being slightly different (better actually, right?) in
the source tarball is perfectly fine if there's a rational reason for
it - you just need to reassure people that it's not a mistake.

For that you just need to be able to answer such questions with "have
a look at http://netbeans.apache.org/release-management.html" instead
of re-explaining every time.

On that page there can be a justification for that minor difference as
well as any things that people need to know about how you build
releases.

Yes, it's a real gotcha I think we're going to have to keep answering. I'd
be interested in your (and other mentors) thoughts on this, because I think
we should be aiming for a situation where git cloning the tag and a full
source zip are identical?

Bingo - removing the tail produces a match, thanks for clarifying!

IMO those things ("the tag will not be identical" etc) should be
documented on a NetBeans release management page, to be able to answer
such questions with an URL.

That's because the tail of this file is generated as part of building the
source zip isn't it?

I still dislike the fact we're doing this. But I guess something reviewers
need to be aware of too?

I still see differences, incubating-netbeans-java-9.0-beta-source.zip contains

MD5 (LICENSE) = 6a87311b0cbacb9250a56cf5950ba9b3

But https://raw.githubusercontent.com/apache/incubator-netbeans/9.0-beta-rc3/LICENSE
has

MD5 (LICENSE) = b1e01b26bacfc2232046c90a330332b3

Re: [Mentors] 9.0 beta rc3 vote thread

Posted by Jan Lahoda <la...@gmail.com>.
I assume this was the release build job that built the zips:
https://builds.apache.org/job/incubator-netbeans-release/205/

From the job, the revision should be:
41da26b7de7506c86dee891b88b50f3c6f37b5bb

but the 9.0-beta-rc3 tag is currently:
33cafadd733880cd01393469624dc4f81bb2e497

Should be easy to fix.

Fortunately this is a non-issue, given the frequency of github commits :)

Re: [Mentors] 9.0 beta rc3 vote thread

Posted by John McDonnell <mc...@gmail.com>.
Could I suggest a tweak to the job config for the
job incubator-netbeans-release?

It seems that it's triggered to build on every commit? I assume there's
other jobs checking this? if not then how about having a CI related job,
i.e. one that builds on every commit(and maybe nightly releases when/if we
hook that up again) and then another one just for releases?

This way we can then start adding logic, like creating a tag in GIT for
every build and only executing that job when preparing a release - since it
won't be building so often we won't get lost in tags. There might be other
logic we include here as well, maybe relating to signatures, automating the
rest of the release process...

Regards

John

Yup. Thanks. We’re learning — and I’m less smart than Jan Lahoda when it
comes to producing releases, though these gentle slaps on the wrist are
great for building up knowledge in understanding the ins and outs of the
Apache Way. :-)

A common practice/rule applied by other ASF projects is to always also
mention the specific git hash upon which the release candidate is based,
besides the tag. That possibly would have prevented this, and/or easier
to check/fix.

Then I think that tag was created incorrectly. Looks like you tagged an
outdated clone or checkout.

Too much to list here, but trivially to check: just diff/compare both
source trees locally (I tend to use/like Meld for these kind of things).

For ASF the vote concerns the source dist *you* prepared, so I'm
proceeding with verifying and voting on that.
But it also should be traceable what the origin is of that source dist.

If you can recall at which time you created that source dist, and
assuming that was against master (?), it might be not difficult to
determine what the HEAD hash was at that time.
Then, after making sure that source dist and that git state for that
hash indeed are equal, I would suggest to drop and recreate the rc3 tag
so that it actually matches the source dist.

I'm fine to +1 the current vote (if/when I'm done and don't find any
blockers, and it looks pretty good to me so far), but IMO the tag needs
to be fixed before moving this vote to the IPMC.

What are the differences?

I did make the tag shortly after the source distribution download — but not
very long after.

If there’s a problem here, the fault is mine personally. But, so, what are
the differences (and how do you identify that)?

based on the 9.0-beta-rc3 tag in git!

I checkout the git tag and compared it with the contents of the source
zip and there is a huge amount of differences.

From which 'tag' was the source zip created from, possibly the tag was
created wrong?

For now I'll proceed with checking the sources from the zip.

My understanding also is that the Apache Incubator exists in order for
projects to work on their IP over multiple incubator releases — and that
the point is to make sure IP issues are clearly identified via JIRA, but
not for all of them to be fixed within one single incubator release.

Note there are two tables. The first for rc3, the second for after

Just a quick check: looking at [1] I see 6 reported issues against rc2
are still open.
Some seem lacking activity or unclear direction, or possibly got 'stuck'
after initial discussion

As rc3 now is up for vote, I assume these open issues are expected to be
non-blocking, right? When are these expected/intended to be resolved?
That is a question which most definitely will be asked by the IPMC, and
therefore best be answered upfront, e.g. added to the vote email for
@general.
