[~cziegeler], that's correct. The idea of my approach was to handle all cases which would lead to a RepositoryException in itemExists before getItemOrNull is even called. Unfortunately, that seems impossible without using a session specific isValidPath() method because there can be different org.apache.jackrabbit.oak.namepath.NamePathMapper implementations. Moreover, the existing NamePathMapperImpl#getOakPath is already quite complex.
