[jira] Created: (DERBY-3420) The -ca option should be removed from
the ij command usage line
The -ca option should be removed from the ij command usage line
---------------------------------------------------------------
Key: DERBY-3420
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-3420
Project: Derby
Issue Type: Bug
Components: Tools
Affects Versions: 10.3.2.1
Reporter: Kim Haase
Priority: Minor
The ij tool gives the following help output:
Usage: java org.apache.derby.tools.ij [-p propertyfile] [-ca connectionAttributePropertyFile] [inputfile]
The -ca connectionAttributePropertyFile option is no longer needed and is deprecated, so it is not documented in the Tools Guide. The option should also be removed from the usage statement.

Bryan Pendleton commented on DERBY-3420:
----------------------------------------
After re-reading Kathey's comments in DERBY-3105, I'm tempted to leave the
-ca implementation present, and just remove it from the usage message. That way
the option will still work, if somebody is somehow depending on it from back in
the Cloudscape days, but it won't confuse new users who encounter the usage message.

Knut Anders Hatlen commented on DERBY-3420:
-------------------------------------------
I'm not sure I see why this has to be removed. The issue description says that it's no longer needed, but it doesn't say which alternatives the users have or why it's bad to have alternatives. I'm not saying that we shouldn't remove the option, just that I don't fully understand why it should be removed.
If we remove the code, I guess we should also remove the connAttributeDefaults variable/parameter from ij.Main.mainCore(), ij.Main.go() and ij.utilMain.go() (it's always null now). I think the utilMain.connAttributeDefaults variable is also always null, so it can be removed too, together with utilMain.getConnectionAttributeDefaults(). Same goes for this section in ij.jj:
// If no ATTRIBUTES on the connection get them from the
// defaults
if (connInfo == null)
connInfo = util.updateConnInfo(userS,passwordS,
utilInstance.getConnAttributeDefaults());
else
connInfo = util.updateConnInfo(userS,passwordS, connInfo);
which can be replaced with
connInfo = util.updateConnInfo(userS, passwordS, connInfo);

Knut Anders Hatlen commented on DERBY-3420:
-------------------------------------------
If we remove all traces of it in the documentation and the usage message, it'll eventually end up as dead code that no one understands the purpose of anyway. If we think that users should use another mechanism, and that the -ca option is barely used (probably true since it's not documented), would it be a cleaner solution to remove both the code and the usage message and add a release note telling users what they should do instead?

Thanks Bryan, the release note is very clear and well written. (Tiny nits: mixed use of ij/IJ and url/URL, and the connection URL contains a superfluous semicolon at the end.) Verified that org.apache.derbyBuild.ReleaseNoteReader accepts the note.

Attachment: removeObsoleteArg.diff
This seems like a small, isolated change request that's been
languishing for some time, so I thought I'd see if I could take
care of it. Attached 'removeObsoleteArg.diff' patch proposal does
the following:
- removes the -ca argument from the usage message
- removes the support for -ca from the IJ code
- updates the ij usage test
Regression testing (and a bit of ad-hoc testing) was clean.
Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Bryan Pendleton commented on DERBY-3420:
----------------------------------------
Thanks Knut for catching that I had only partially removed the implementation.
I suppose another alternative would be to remove the reference from the usage
message (and the test output), but leave the -ca implementation in place.
I'm a little concerned about the utility of a feature for which (apparently) the
community has written neither documentation nor tests. By proposing to
remove the implementation, I was agreeing with John's observation that if
we don't wish to document and test the feature, why do we want to keep the code?
We could always recover the code later from the svn history if we changed our mind.
I think at this point I find that I don't understand what purpose the feature has, but
on the other hand am quite happy to leave the feature if the community feels it
might be useful.
But if we decide to leave it, it seems like we ought to be able to come up with
enough of an example of how to use it, that we could turn that example into
a test and some documentation.
Kim, when you originally reported this issue, you wrote that the -ca option
was "no longer needed and is deprecated"; do you recall what discussions led
to that conclusion?

-------------------------------------------
Here's an example of how to use it:
1) Create a file called connection.properties which contains:
territory=no_NO
collation=TERRITORY_BASED
create=true
2) Start ij with -ca connection.properties
Now databases that don't exist should be automatically created when you connect to them, and they should have Norwegian collation by default.
3) Connect to a database that doesn't already exist and see that it's created and that ORDER BY uses Norwegian collation rules:
ij> connect 'jdbc:derby:mydb';
ij> select * from (values 'aa','ab','ba','bb') v(x) order by x;
X

ab
ba
bb
aa

I'm afraid there's still one little problem. You did right to remove the colon from within the single quote, but the punctuation mark at the end should be a semicolon:

[jira] Updated: (DERBY-3420) The -ca option should be removed from
ij and from the ij command usage line
Posted by "Bryan Pendleton (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.

Bryan Pendleton updated DERBY-3420:
-----------------------------------
Attachment: removeMoreCodeReferences.diff
Attached is 'removeMoreCodeReferences.diff', which chases down
the rest of the -ca processing in the IJ code and removes it.
Regression tests were clean; comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Bryan Pendleton updated DERBY-3420:
-----------------------------------
Attachment: releaseNote.html
Minor changes to releaseNode.html to spell 'ij' consistently in lower-case,
'URL' consistently in upper case, and to remove the stray semi-colon.
I'm intending to commit this patch to the trunk in the next few days.

-------------------------------------------
I didn't find anything more to remove, so +1 from me to commit the patch and add a release note telling the option is gone.

----------------------------
Closing, after checking that option no longer appears in usage statement and that trying to use it results in the correct usage statement.
