[ANN] Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 released

The Apache OpenOffice project is pleased to announce the immediate
availability of OpenOffice 4.1.0. You can download it from our
website [1].

Apache OpenOffice 4.1 is a minor update with many bugfixes and 2 major
improvements. It's the first version where we have the
iAccessibility2 support integrated and available. A very huge step
forward to better support disabled users especially on Windows. The
second improvement is the switch to 64 bit on MacOS. A long
and overdue "must do" shift forward to support newer APIs and platforms
on MacOS.

And AOO 4.1.0 increases again the number of supported languages which is
now 38. The supported languages are Asturian, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish,
German, Greek, English (GB + US), Spanish, Basque, Finnish, French,
Scots Gaelic, Galician, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese,
Khmer, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmal, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese,
Portuguese Brazil, Russian, Slovak, Serbian Cyrillic, Swedish, Tamil,
Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese, Chinese (Simplified + Traditional).

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 will be a further key milestone to continue the
success of OpenOffice.

Details of new features and enhancements in this release are described
in the Release Notes [2].

Those interested in the source code can download it via the links on
this page [3].

Juergen Schmidt, Apache OpenOffice Release Manager and member of the

OpenOffice recently dropped support for Mac OS X 10.6 and lower.

Congratulations!

Just to report a download problem.

On clicking on the download link (1) below, the webpage opened
prompting the download the version for OS X 10.6 or older, apparently
correctly.

Having just attempted to install it, my macbook running Leopard (OS X
10.5.8) is refusing, saying it cannot use this version. This usually
happens when the software is intended for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) or
later.

So something is slightly wonky somewhere.

Will now attempt to download using the all platforms page...

Dear Jürgen,

I downloaded AOO 4.1.0 and after installation of the full product, nothing
worked...

I used Firefox for the download (not Internet Explorer, which causes so
much trouble these days).

I have it uninstalled as completely as I can. Later today I'll give it
another try.

Kind regards,
Arnold Paalvast

Another small fix to do: "Latest confirmation on" should be updated
accordingly, and probably only keep 4.1.0 and 4.2.0-dev.

That beta was special. It was the last release by Oracle and it is quite
different from 3.4.0 final, that was the first Apache release. It's good
to keep it to know whether a bug originated at Apache, where we can
investigate it more easily, or before Apache.

   Andrea.

Thanks for this bigger update. :-)

Do we still need the "OOo 3.4.0 Beta"? I would disable this as-well as
IMHO it is no linger needed like 4.1.0 Beta.

Good point. I disabled the 4.1.0-Beta and 4.1.0-dev versions, disabled
the 4.1.0 target milestone, added a 4.2.0-dev version, also created a
new 4.2.0 target and disabled the 4.1.0-release-blocker flag.

If we decide to pursue a 4.1.1 version too then that target can be added
too.

This is now (29.04.2014 13:50 MESZ) official?

If so (I think this is so) then I'll update the de-website.

Hello Jürgen: I'm curious to know about, why last March 27th I got an
update release of Apache Open Office 4.1.0 (it was a bit over 140 Mb) and
now again your offer "the latest release of the same 4.1.0. (but with only
136 MB). Are they the same? Why the difference in memory size? I've
noticed in the newer one you have eliminated the red feather design of your
homepage logo, but also (I regret!) you eliminated the beautiful design of
the Seagulls over the Blue Circle out of the Desktop Icon, now my desktop
icon is something I don't like! However I've noticed this newest one is
kind of faster to load, which I celebrate!

As per my answer on another thread we have updated the default to AOO 4.1.
And yes, people who subscribed to the 'Keep me updated' feature will
automatically receive an email notifying them about the new release.

This must be fixed in the SourceForge OpenOffice mirror project by those
who can administer it. Note: if I remember correctly, this will trigger
notification e-mails to people who are "following" the OpenOffice
project on SourceForge.

If this is still happening (maybe it was related to cache or
propagation) can you please give us the exact link from the download
page to SourceForge? I.e., the target of the "Download Apache OpenOffice
4.1.0" link?

Regards,
   Andrea.

Re: [ANN] Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 released

FYI: at Sourceforge, the big green download button downloads the 4.0.1
version. It happened to me, and I almost installed 4.0.1 twice on my
computer.

Later, I noticed the dark red error message on the sourceforge page, which
states that "the 4.1.0/binaries/...86.exe file can't be found or isn't
available. ..."

I guess other users will find this annoying, and not all of them will find
the folder browsing any comfortable.

Other than that, Congratulations on the 4.1 release.
Thanks to all developers & users who reported, fixed, replied, ... to
support OpenOffice.

Will version 4.1.0 automatically download and replace my current version or do I have to download the new version and erase my older version (Or is the erasure automatic?).

Thank you Juergen Schmidt.
OpenOffice software is impressive; both the download and the installation
were totally seamless and easy to do. This software is a pleasure to work
with.

I just downloaded the latest Open Office but my OSX Maverick system tells
me I am not allowed to open it because it's from an unauthorized developer.
Yet I have been using the previous version of Open Office. Can this be
fixed? If not, can I download the previous version of Open Office?

Thank you

The working version is usually right.

If you install a new version, your system have to learn to live peacefully
with the new version.

The simple way is usually right.

Just live peacefully with minor problems.

The only thing I can think of is that you have a print definition on one
of the other sheets.
If there is no Print Format defined on a sheet it will show gray for
that sheet.
Two ways to check, tab trough the other sheets or delete all print
definitions.

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 released

Opened new release. My problem trying to get Page Break Preview to work has
not been fixed.

When I open up my spread sheet and click on page break preview the entire
page is gray and I cannot move anything to get it in open white so I can set
page breaks.

Any suggestions?

Actually this discussion became confusing at times, but we agree on
this. I mean: now OpenOffice 4.1 was announced and we can let other
sites link to our binaries too. Same as Rob wrote, same as you wrote.

For me it was important to keep out "foreign" downloaders while we are
in Beta mode or the final release is not yet public announced. For this
IMHO the staging bit is working fine.

However, Andrea seems to have some further ideas.

Understood.

But maybe it's helpful to get only the table? And build some own text
around it.

To give it a try do this:

- include the "download_other.js" (note to get the correct
   sub-dir!) like this:
   <script type="text/javascript" src="download_other.js"></script>

- call the function to print the table (1 = release version):
   write_table( 1 );

To get the complete context just have a look into the source code of the
"other.html" file.

Maybe it helps you not to do all the work on your own. ;-)

We expose only the relevant checksum when a user is downloading a file.
It's the "MD5" (or SHA256, or whatever) link shown under the green box
in http://www.openoffice.org/download/

If you want to see the checksum for a given file instead, you must browse
http://www.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.0/binaries/
for example: the MD5 checksum file for the Windows version in French is

http://www.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.0/binaries/fr/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Win_x86_langpack_fr.exe.md5

it's probably a good idea to check the md5 or any other checksum file to
verify the download

I have Windows 8.1 Enterprise running in a VM. I downloaded AOO 4.1.0
German from www.openoffice.org and successfully installed the new
release of AOO on this system.
I did not get any error message from NSIS or from MSI during the
installation.

May be - as given in the NSIS error - the download failed on your attempt.

Hello,

As I understand it, version 4.1.0 should run on Mac OSX 10.6.8. However,
when I try
to run the program, I receive an error message saying it only works with
10.7 and above;
clicking the OK button leaves me in Nowhere Land.

What's the real story? *:-)*

Is there a GB pack install for AOO 4.1.0? I am keen to take advantage of the 64 bit capability for the Mac OS of the latest release but need the GB version.

This is now (29.04.2014 13:50 MESZ) official?

This is strange. The opposite is true. OpenOffice 4.0.1 is the last
supported version on Mac OS X 10.6.x or lower. The new OpenOffice 4.1.0
requires Mac OS X 10.7 or higher. If we wrote some wrong information
somewhere, please give us a link, so that we can correct it.

If you need to go back to 4.0.1, please download it again from this link:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/4.0.1/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.0.1_MacOS_x86_install_en-US.dmg/download

(wait 5 seconds for the download to start after you click the link)

Regards,
   Andrea.

Re: [ANN] Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 released

Hello, I thought I saw that the updated version of open office was for 10.6
or lower. I saw that somewhere. Now I have 10.6 and I have replaced the
download of 4.1.0 in my computer and I am
at a loss what to do because I can't access my files.

do you have any suggestion? How to get back the version previous to 4.1.0?
This is very sad for me because I relied on open office every day. Why did
your company ply me with please click here for upgrades over and over again
until I finally clicked on the damn thing and now I am in the soup.

Please advise, and straighten out your choices of whom you tell to upgrade.
It is a nuisance to have to see that and then print somewhere it is for
10.6 or lower.
