Anyone able to help the Apache Thift project with Rust?

Hi all,

It seems that the Apache Thrift project is thinking of dropping the Rust support for Thrift as the community is low on people with Rust knowledge.
I know we’re using Thrift and I know we’ve got an IoTDB Rust client … possibly if someone has some free cycles, could be good to say hi and possibly help them out?

Chris

Hi all,

A quick update: Apache Thrift's Rust support appears to be actively maintained
again.

I submitted a PR to remove the Rust deprecation warning, and it was merged:

https://github.com/apache/thrift/pull/3637

After that, THRIFT-5917 was closed as "Won't Do", so the plan to drop Rust
support is no longer being pursued:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-5917

Best regards,
Haonan

As I know, Thift is trying to drop the Rust support because no contributor worked on the failed Rust CI for a long time.
They are going drop it in 0.24.0. See https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-5917
If some rust programers can fix the problems, they may change the dropping plan.

BTW, the Rust Thrift is missing a lot of features such as the TLS support...

hi chris and yuan

Let me add one point: even if Thrift stops being maintained rust, the impact on IoTDB that still uses version 0.14 seems limited?

HI Yuan,

Well … I have no issues with them dropping the rust client … I just knew that we were also using it and that we might care if it goes away.
I would assume, once they drop the rust client, we probably should also drop our IoTDB rust client, as we won’t be getting any updates on the one we’re using.

Hi Chris,

It is truly a pity to hear that the Apache Thrift project is considering
dropping its Rust support.

Regarding our side, the IoTDB Rust client hasn't been actively maintained
for quite some time. We also haven't received much feedback or seen high
demand for it within our community recently, so it might be difficult for
us to find someone with the spare cycles and active Rust expertise to help
out at this moment.

However, perhaps the Datafusion community might be a better group to reach
out to? They have many Rust experts who might be able to provide some
assistance.

Best regards,

Yuan
