TOP STORIES

__________HP Enhances Server Line___________
Hewlett-Packard is prepping its 25-year-old proprietary 3000
server line for E-business applications. Its new addition to
the series, the HP 3000 989KS/x50 server, will include Web-
enabling technologies, advanced HP AutoRAID storage, and
integrated HP OpenView system-management functionality.

The new models will be certified for running Apache on
MPE/ix, which enables persistent connections, content
negotiation, host-name identification, and name-based
virtual hosts, among other features. They will also provide
Java Database Connectivity support for data interoperability
over the Internet, and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
X.500 support for device interoperability. The 1.3-terabyte
AutoRAID Model 12H Disk Array offers the capacity,
redundancy, and availability required for supporting
Internet operations. HP says the array is tightly integrated
with the hardware and includes automated functionality to
reduce administration and management requirements. OpenView
integration means customers can centrally manage the 3000
along with the NT and Unix systems already running part of
their E-business operations.

The servers are based on the 240-MHz PA 8200 RISC processor,
which HP says is 25% faster than current systems. The
hardware can support up to six processors, and systems will
be priced between $102,900 and $217,900.
