Anyone built latest Xalan CVS w/ JDK 1.3 for Windows?

I'm not having any luck getting Xalan to build with JDK 1.3 for Windows.
For whatever reason, it can't find the Xerces classes.  I've tried adding it
to the CLASSPATH, adding it to the ext directory, etc, to no avail.  Xerces
built fine, however.  I haven't tried it with Ant yet, (I'd really like to
see the makefiles deprecated...:)...)
