It's not invalid. The gauge metric allows any type to be exposed, and the support is naturally dependent by the actual backends. For example, with JMX you can access this metric without a problem.

Note that there is FLINK-6053 to change this and limit gauges to numbers, but this will have to wait until 2.0 .
