No, this doesn't have anything at all to do with the XML configuration. Many Appenders extend AbstractOutputStreamAppender because it was found to be very flexible to do that. Layouts that return Strings are able to easily convert those to byte arrays that can be written to the OutputStream. 

If you have an example of something that worked in Log4j 1.2 I'd be happy to look at it and see how it can be made to work in Log4j 2.
