This patch fixes most of the portability problems of the current build scripts. I can build the native libraries on Solaris 10 using the following:

export LDFLAGS="-L /usr/local/lib"
ant -Dcompile.native=true -Dnonspace.os=SunOS -Dmake.cmd=gmake clean tar
{noformat}
{{-Dnonspace.os=SunOS}} is needed since the code in build.xml doesn't work on Solaris (I haven't figured out why). And I couldn't get the build to work with regular {{make}}, so I used {{gmake}}.
I haven't yet tested whether the build still works on Linux with these changes.
(Even with these changes native builds on Mac OS X don't work - but they are getting closer.)
